Scientific Specialist Research Statistical Data Scientist

Harpenden, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

Job Description

Scientific Specialist - Research Statistical Data Scientist

Overview Of Role

Do you have a passion for applying statistical and data science approaches to tackle novel research challenges in agricultural and environmental sciences? We are seeking a motivated and innovative statistical data scientist to join the Digital Transformation project at the institute, working as part of the Statistics and Data Science Section. The Digital Transformation project at Rothamsted Research includes a strong focus on addressing FAIR data principles. A key element of this is concerned with enabling the re-use and fusion/integration of data sets to address novel research questions.

Within this project you will:

  • scope out the potential for data fusion/integration and secondary data analysis approaches to be applied to the catalogued data sets collated within the Digital Transformation project.
  • explore the range of tools that have already been developed, and identify how these can be applied across the diverse range of datasets collected within the institute.
  • develop one or more case studies, in collaboration with those responsible for generating these data sets, to demonstrate the potential impact of secondary data analyses to be applied to integrated datasets to address novel questions.
The successful candidate will have:
  • experience of applying statistical and data science methods to real biological data in a research context
  • a broad knowledge of relevant statistical methods, including a range of statistical modelling approaches, methods for multi-trial and meta-analysis, and multivariate analysis approaches
  • a knowledge of biologically relevant modern statistical data science methods, including AI, \'big data\' and Bayesian approaches, and data fusion/integration techniques
  • good general computing skills, including good knowledge of one or more statistical software packages or environments
  • a logical approach and pragmatic attitude to problem solving and model development
Ideally, you will also have an appreciation of the breadth of current UK agricultural and environmental research challenges.

If you are a motivated and skilled applied statistician looking to contribute to innovative research and cutting-edge discoveries, we invite you to join our team. Help us to make the most of our investments in data collection and make a lasting impact on sustainable agriculture.

Interested but not sure that you meet all of the criteria? At Rothamsted we are committed to building diverse teams, so please apply even if your past experience doesn\'t align perfectly with the requirements - you might just be the perfect fit!

This is a fixed-term appointment, currently funded for the remaining duration of the Digital Transformation project to the end of March 2025. But we expect the scoping exercise to identify funding opportunities for future applications of the approaches identified and developed. Salary is in the range of either Band D \xc2\xa329,842-\xc2\xa332,315 or Band E \xc2\xa337,890-\xc2\xa341,438 p.a (dependent on skills and experience).
