Full-time (37.5 hours per week), shift basis including weekends. Fixed term until 4th January 2026.

Background



St Martin-in-the-Fields is a working parish church in the heart of London. St Martin's operates a number of successful commercial activities on site including the Shop at St Martin's, Box Office, Cafe in the Crypt and Courtyard, Events spaces and a full and varied programme of concerts, the profits from which support the work of the church.

Visitors to the Shop at St Martin's are delighted by the range of British made gifts, unusual and value for money souvenirs, as well as books, music, and stationery. At Christmas St Martin's is full to the brim with seasonal decorations, Christmas cribs and one of the best selections of charity Christmas cards in central London.

Nature and scope of the job



In this fixed-term role, you will be working directly with our customers over the busy Christmas period, providing information about the products we sell and how to select and make brass rubbings. You will need to demonstrate the highest levels of customer service and have a positive attitude in everything you do. You should demonstrate knowledge of the organisation as a whole and be able to talk about this freely with customers. Full training for this will be provided.

The Shop is situated in the foyer space of the Crypt of St Martin's and is often the first part of our Crypt that visitors experience. You will therefore be the face of our brand and provide a welcoming atmosphere, assisting visitors with anything from way-finding to advising on the best gifts for their friends and family.

Main duties and responsibilities



Ensure all customers are served courteously, efficiently and professionally, anticipating and responding flexibly to all customer needs; Provide a warm welcome to visitors throughout the site as one of the first points of contact in the Crypt; Use appropriate techniques and product knowledge to make sales and deliver high levels of customer satisfaction to secure customer loyalty; Process sales, refunds and exchanges in accordance with our procedures; Receive deliveries of stock and maintain stock levels in the shop as needed, using visual merchandising to ensure products are well presented; Carryout occasional stock checks as necessary and participate in the annual full stock take, counting with accuracy; When required, be responsible for the open and close of the shop including ensuring merchandise is set out, and packed away and kept secure; Be aware of any security issues including thefts from the shop, reporting any suspicious behaviour to the security team; Support with processing and packing orders from the online shop; Maintain the presentation and cleanliness of the retail space; and Provide assistance to customers who wish to use the brass rubbing activity and demonstrate the activity when required.
This list of duties is not exhaustive, and you may, from time to time, be required to undertake other duties in line with the expectations of this role.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities



You will have:

Experience in a retail or customer service role is desirable but not essential; Flexibility to work weekends and closing shifts; Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a flair for visitor experience; Demonstrable ability to deliver excellent customer service with a warm and friendly manner; Confidence in working with cash and card transactions (use of EPoS desirable but not essential as training will be provided); Ability to use initiative to identify tasks and sales opportunities throughout the work day and without instruction from your supervisor; Strong attention to detail and presentation; and Enthusiasm for working as part of a wider team across a diverse and exciting site in central London.
Desirable:

Familiarity with and sympathy of the mission and values of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Solid general knowledge of the local area.
