SEN Governor

to join our governing body and play a vital role in shaping the educational experience for all pupils.

Key Responsibilities



As our SEN Governor, you will:

Strategic Oversight



Ensure the school remains fully compliant with the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and all relevant legislation. Monitor and evaluate SEND policies, practices, and provision tailored to a specialist setting. Collaborate with the governing body to support and enhance the School Development Plan. Ensure staffing and resources for SEND are used effectively and sustainably.

Support and Challenge



Meet regularly with the school's SENCo/Inclusion Lead to: Understand the complex and diverse needs of our pupils. Review the impact of targeted interventions, therapies, and support strategies. Discuss professional development for staff in specialist approaches. Ask constructive, challenging questions such as: Are pupils making meaningful progress against personalised targets? How do we evaluate success in a complex needs context? Champion inclusion, high aspirations, and equity for every pupil.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing



Ensure safeguarding policies account for the unique vulnerabilities of children with SEND. Understand the interplay between mental health, behaviour, and attendance within a specialist provision.

Training and Development



Attend SEND and inclusion training for governors. Keep up to date with national developments in specialist SEND education.

Qualities and Skills Required



We are looking for someone who:

Is deeply committed to inclusion, equity, and the rights of children with additional needs. Can provide both support and challenge in a constructive, informed manner. Has the curiosity and willingness to engage with a wide range of SEND needs. Brings sensitivity, discretion, and a genuine passion for specialist education.

Previous experience in SEND within an educational setting is essential.



Time Commitment



Termly meetings with the SENCo/Inclusion Lead. Attendance at full governing body meetings. Occasional visits to experience SEND provision in action.
