Key Responsibilities

As a

SEN Teaching Assistant

, you will:

Specialist Support:

Provide consistent, one-to-one and small-group assistance for two specific pupils, focusing on communication, behaviour, and engagement.

Makaton Expertise:

Employ your proven Makaton skills to communicate effectively with pupils who are non-verbal or have limited verbal ability, ensuring they can access learning and daily routines.

Behaviour Management:

Implement positive, structured behaviour strategies to manage challenging behaviours safely and proactively.

Complex Needs:

Deliver care tailored to pupils with complex physical or medical needs, including intimate care with the highest levels of professionalism and respect.

Base Provision Work:

Operate primarily in a specialist base unit, outside the mainstream classroom, to deliver focused interventions and personalised learning opportunities.

Collaboration:

Work alongside class teachers, senior leaders, and external specialists to follow and adapt individual education plans, ensuring each pupil progresses towards their personal targets.

Essential Experience:

Proven, practical experience using Makaton to support children with communication difficulties.

Relevant SEN Experience:

Background working with children with autism, global developmental delay, or other complex needs.

Behaviour Management Skills:

Confidence in using positive, consistent strategies to manage challenging behaviour effectively.

Adaptability:

Flexibility to adjust approaches based on pupils' evolving needs and behaviours throughout the day.

Strong Communication:

Ability to communicate clearly with pupils, colleagues, and parents, both verbally and in writing.

Teamwork:

A collaborative mindset, working effectively within a multi-disciplinary team to achieve the best outcomes for pupils.

Qualifications:

While a relevant qualification such as CACHE Level Two is desirable, equivalent significant experience will be considered. Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain one) is essential.
