We\'re looking for an exceptional Senior Developer to help us make a difference to our planet.

At the Met Office we embrace hybrid working. As our Senior Developer we require you to be on site at our Exeter HQ an average 1 day per fortnight, but this can be adjusted based on conversations with your line manager. You can choose to work more frequently in our state-of-the-art office if you\'d prefer. As our Senior Developer, your starting salary will be \xc2\xa338,838. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to \xc2\xa341,725 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards \xc2\xa345,257 over time.

In addition you will be paid \xc2\xa36,000 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to \xc2\xa359757.00 annually, which includes basic salary, market supplement, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

This role is within the Analysis, Visualisation and Data (AVD) team, who are responsible for developing, maintaining and supporting the scientific visualisation and analysis software used in research and operations in the Met Office. We mainly work in the public domain, owning the SciTools project on GitHub and contributing to a range of open-source projects. The primary programming language we use is Python, with libraries in a variety of languages contributing to the capabilities we provide. We are evolving our toolset to provide capabilities to the scientific research and operational meteorology communities. Additionally, we provision and maintain the conda based Python environments used by our communities including operational systems. These capabilities are part of the Met Office making best use of our supercomputer to work at the forefront of weather and climate science for protection, prosperity and well-being. Job Purpose

As a Senior Developer, you will be leading on the Scientific Software Stack service provided by the AVD Team, this includes the responsibilities:
  • Lead the support and maintenance of conda tooling and provision of Python based environments (This service is named the Scientific Software Stack)
  • Lead the delivery and optimisation of complex programs and components
  • Providing support to scientific programmers and application developers
  • Taking on abstract technical problems and apply your expertise to devise innovative solutions
  • Provide mentoring on technical areas across teams where appropriate
  • Identify future technologies and libraries for adoption
  • Participate in Community of Practice (Guilds)
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities * Demonstrable experience programming in Python and using conda (Experts by nature)
  • Demonstrable, high-level skills in software development, programming philosophies and data analytics (We keep evolving)
  • Excellent communication skills that adapt to all level of stakeholders (We\'re better together)
  • Mentoring developers on best practice and general advice
  • Engaging with and using Open-Source community & toolin
