Position Overview




The Senior Director of Market Access & Reimbursement, EMEA is responsible for directing and executing the overall EMEA market access strategy for Shockwave's existing and future products. The individual has in-depth expertise in developing and implementing strategic and tactical market access and reimbursement initiatives across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.


A key focus of this position is securing coding, coverage, and funding pathways for Shockwave's novel intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) therapy in priority markets. Candidates should have a proven track record of success in obtaining access for innovative medical technologies within diverse healthcare systems, including direct engagement with national and regional payer bodies, health technology assessment (HTA) agencies, and hospital procurement processes.


Experience in influencing reimbursement policies, preparing value dossiers, and successfully communicating value to payers, clinicians, and policymakers is essential. The role will also involve active engagement with external stakeholders including Ministries of Health, HTA bodies (e.g., NICE, HAS, G-BA, ZIN), national coding committees, physician specialty societies, and relevant trade associations.


Strong capabilities in influence, communication, collaboration, and partnership are critical. The individual will be highly skilled at developing relationships across multiple cultures and will have experience working with key opinion leaders (KOLs), hospital administrators, clinical societies, and senior management. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Market Access & Reimbursement, this person will play a highly visible and critical role in launching new products and expanding applications for IVL across EMEA.

Key Responsibilities



Strategic Access & Reimbursement: Lead and support market access and reimbursement initiatives for current and future products in EMEA, including advocacy with KOLs, physician societies, and national coding authorities. Market Access Strategy: Develop and execute strategies to secure reimbursement and funding for IVL therapy across priority markets, with a focus on national/regional payer systems, DRG/tariff structures, and hospital budget impact. Team Leadership: Line management responsibility for EMEA Market Access team and coordination with in-country and distributor-based market access professionals. Global & Local Value Dossier Development: Build, adapt, and refine global value dossiers for public and private coverage and prepare HTA submissions tailored to each market's requirements. Collaboration with Clinical & Medical Affairs: Partner to generate and publish health economic and cost-effectiveness data supporting payer and provider decision-making. Consultant & Project Management: Manage multiple consultants and projects across EMEA to support strategic access initiatives. Market Access Educational Tools: Create and manage educational/promotional materials to support reimbursement and market access activities in collaboration with the commercial teams. Health Policy & Environmental Scanning: Monitor health policy developments, coding/tariff updates, and funding changes that impact market access for innovative cardiovascular devices. HTA & Payer Engagement: Lead preparations for and manage HTA submissions, coding applications, and reimbursement dossiers to ensure timely market access. Reimbursement & Funding Pathway Development: Design and implement practical strategies to secure national, regional, and hospital-level funding for new and existing indications. HEOR Publication Planning: Contribute to clinical and economic outcomes research publications to strengthen value propositions. Stakeholder Engagement & Education: Build relationships with Ministries of Health, HTA bodies, hospital decision-makers, and clinician advocates. Lead awareness campaigns and stakeholder briefings. Value Messaging: Partner with cross-functional teams to develop compelling economic and clinical value messaging tailored to local payer and provider audiences. Support Product Development & Strategic Pricing: Provide functional input to product pipeline and pricing strategy, ensuring market access considerations are addressed early in the process. Functional Representation & Internal Upskilling: Represent EMEA market access in cross-functional forums, present access strategies, and train internal stakeholders. Support Commercial Launches: Facilitate reimbursement pathway readiness, pre-launch access activities, and funding advocacy for new indications. External Landscape Monitoring: Assess evolving healthcare funding trends, procurement models, and competitive market access activities. Internal Collaboration & Knowledge Development: Share best practices, keep updated on clinical trial progress, and continuously refine economic value messaging. Other Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by the Vice President of Market Access & Reimbursement.

Requirements



Minimum 15+ years of professional experience, with 7+ years in implantable medical device market access/reimbursement, specifically within the EMEA region. Demonstrated success in obtaining coding, reimbursement, and funding for novel therapies in multiple EMEA healthcare systems. BS/BA degree required; advanced degree (e.g., MSc, MPH, or PhD) in health policy, health services research, public health, economics, or related discipline preferred. Deep knowledge of EMEA healthcare systems, reimbursement pathways, HTA processes, and procurement models. Experience preparing and submitting value dossiers to agencies such as NICE (UK), HAS (France), G-BA (Germany), ZIN (Netherlands), and equivalent bodies in other priority markets. Proven ability to influence national and regional reimbursement policies and decision-making processes. Experience working with clinical societies, payer advisory boards, and trade associations in EMEA. Ability to work effectively across multiple cultures, functions, and levels of seniority. Analytical skills to structure complex issues, synthesize insights, and communicate clearly to diverse stakeholders. Strong organizational, project management, and time management skills. Self-motivated and able to work effectively with minimal supervision. Credibility to build trusted relationships with physicians, HTA reviewers, and payer representatives. Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills. Proven track record in managing multiple concurrent projects and consultants. Ability to integrate business strategies into actionable market access plans. Enthusiastic, positive, and collaborative team player. * Willingness to travel up to 30% within EMEA.
