Your role
As a Senior Hardware Engineer specialising in Digital FPGA at Pico Technology, you will be at the heart of our high speed data acquisition architecture. You will design and implement RTL that interfaces high performance ADCs with PC streaming protocols, pushing the boundaries of what our instruments can achieve. Your expertise will enable hardware accelerated signal processing, deep memory management, and precise triggering, ensuring our devices deliver real time measurements that exceed the capabilities of standard software.
What you'll be doing:
Lead the design and development of FPGA functionality from initial requirements through to VHDL implementation within complex hardware projects.
Develop digital logic to optimise data throughput and minimise latency, ensuring robust performance for high speed signal processing.
Build comprehensive test benches and conduct in-system debugging to verify designs and ensure seamless integration with PC software.
Evaluate and select FPGAs for new designs, carefully balancing performance requirements against cost, availability, and long term obsolescence.
Calculate, simulate, and prototype designs to estimate performance and reliability, proactively eliminating high risk areas to ensure first time right quality.
Partner with the Product Line team on project scoping and estimation, contributing to design reviews and supporting electronic hardware verification.
What you'll need:
Proven experience designing and developing high performance solutions using VHDL or Verilog, ideally with Xilinx or Altera tools.
A strong grasp of digital and analogue hardware design principles, with experience developing integrated, multi-layered PCB solutions.
Deep understanding of signal integrity, noise mitigation, and crosstalk management in high speed, mixed signal circuits.
The ability to diagnose and resolve complex hardware faults using simulation and rigorous, data-driven test methodologies.
Excellent skills in translating complex technical data into actionable insights for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
A detail focussed and inquisitive approach, with the organisational skills to deliver high quality work within planned Agile timescales.
Experience with Vivado, ModelSim, or Git; scripting knowledge (Python/TCL); or expertise in Clock Domain Crossing and High Level Synthesis.
