The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO)conducts cutting-edge research, attracting researchers and professional staff of the highest caliber. The Institute is committed to a multi-disciplinary research portfolio that furthers an understanding of the eye and visual system linked with clinical investigations targeted to specific problems in the prevention and treatment of eye disease.



In 2027 IoO will be moving to a new site in Camden along with Moorfields Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Charity to create a World leading center for advancing eye health


About the role

Duration: The post is available asap and is funded until 31/07/2027



Salary: UCL Grade 8 (54,172 - 62,035)



The Senior Laboratory Manager will be a key member of the IoO Operations team responsible for managing Oriel operational readiness projects as part of the IoO Services Transition Workstream. In particular the role holder will prepare labs for the move, work with research leads to wind down experiments, co-ordinate decommissioning of equipment and labs and manage what is left behind. As a Senior Laboratory Manager the role holder will directly line manage a Technician also working on the Oriel project.



The postholder is required to work both independently and in collaboration with the wider Oriel team, laboratory management team, other colleagues within IoO and UCL, and with external stakeholders to ensure the institute's operational readiness activities are effectively and proactively supported.


The post is open to external candidates on a fixed-term basis and to UCL internal candidates on a secondment basis. If you are applying on a secondment basis, please ensure you have discussed the possibility of a secondment with your line manager before applying.


About you

The successful candidate will have a BSc degree in a relevant subject or have substantial relevant experience and will have practical and technical experience in a research laboratory.



A project management qualification or relevant experience working on transformational projects is essential as is demonstrable experience in managing change from inception to successful implementation



You will have experience of brokering relationships with stakeholders at all levels and experience of working collaboratively in cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams and to shape developments through active participation. Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels, with both technical and non-technical audiences is essential.
