You will be responsible for the provision of legal advice and support on technology and intellectual property / commercial matters affecting the organisation across all divisions/business lines with a particular focus on technology and IP matters.

This includes leading on the negotiation of technology development agreements with internal and external third parties including engineering and technology team principals and other team members, as well as supporting other lawyers and their teams on the intellectual property aspects of other commercial and technology agreements.

This role reports into the global CTO with a dotted line to the General Counsel, so that you are truly embedded into the technology teams you will be supporting, whilst being a part of the legal team for support and guidance when needed. This role has four direct reports, therefore prior people management would be highly advantageous.

We\'re looking for someone who is able to do the following:

  • Provide IP expertise to the technical leadership community, both in the development of technology strategies and the effective consideration of IP risks and opportunities
  • Lead on key technology collaborations and agreements, ensuring both IP terms and wider legal aspects (such as liability limitations, funding/financial aspects, project management, termination, export control, governing law, dispute resolution etc.) are covered effectively in the interests of the business, in a collaborative manner with non-legal specialists and other business line lawyers where required
  • Manage functional responsibilities within the IP team, including reporting, competence development, training, policies and processes, best practice sharing, management of external service providers (including legal counsel and software/database providers) and budget management.
It\'s essential that this person has a growth mindset, is able to demonstrate flexibility and can show their ability to deal with organisational ambiguity.

This role will suit someone who:
  • Has at least 8 years of experience working as a lawyer with in-house experience gained in the technology space
  • Has significant experience in all aspects of intellectual property / commercial technology matters including multiparty party development agreements, grant funding agreements, collaboration agreements, licensing, M&A, enforcement of rights and disputes, patent prosecution and portfolio management
  • Proven track record in either managing teams or managing project teams
  • Can advise on highly complex IP issues
  • Enjoys developing relationships with key stakeholders
  • Can develop a good understanding of technical subject matter so as to engage with peers, colleagues etc.
