Job Description

A Senior Library Assistant takes responsibility for the day-to-day staffing, finances, and stock of the library, deputises for the Library Manager, and acts as the responsible person for the building--ensuring that a compliant, efficient, and effective library service and Cheshire East customer access point is provided to the public.



This is a job share role, with the successful candidate working alongside a colleague who covers the latter part of the week. The post holder will be expected to communicate regularly and collaborate effectively with their job share partner to ensure continuity of service, shared responsibility for tasks, and smooth operation of the library.


Location: Holmes Chapel Library Hours: 14 hours per week (Monday 09:00-17:00 and Tuesday 10:00-17:00) Grade: 6 Contract: Permanent Reports to: Library Manager

The job holder may be required at any time to undertake any work up to and/or at a level consistent with existing responsibilities. These tasks may be at any location in Cheshire East, to ensure the effective deployment of labour, materials, transport, and equipment to meet daily service requirements.

Are you passionate about providing excellent customer service and supporting your local community? Holmes Chapel Library is looking for a Senior Library Assistant to work 14 hours per week (Monday and Tuesday, 9am-5pm).



As part of our dedicated team, you'll help deliver a wide range of services to the public, manage daily operations and library staff, support both library and Council customer service point functions. You'll also play a key role in organising and running events, maintaining stock and financial records, and ensuring the library remains a welcoming and safe space.



Key responsibilities include:


Taking responsibility for the day-to-day staffing, finances and stock of the library. Acting as the responsible person for the building, ensuring a compliant, efficient and effective library service and Cheshire East customer access point. Managing a team of Library Assistants and ensuring duties and routines are properly discharged in accordance with the Council's prescribed standards of service. Acting as a first point of contact for users of the library, assessing their needs and directing them to appropriate sources of help or information. Undertaking library duties and resolving disputes or queries in compliance with service standards and regulations. Operating business support systems and ensuring accurate administrative procedures relating to staff, finance, stock and property. Supporting the Library Manager and Librarians to identify customer needs and contribute to service improvements. Collaborating with support services, council services, external partners and contractors to maintain building and equipment standards. Operating safety and security systems within the library to ensure personal and public safety.

We're looking for someone with:

Excellent customer care and communication skills Strong IT skills and experience with library systems A flexible, cheerful, and proactive approach A genuine interest in books, learning, and community engagement Experience in a supervisory or customer-facing role

You'll be working in a small, friendly team and may occasionally be asked to support other libraries in the area.
