To serve as a scientific liaison to the medical/academic community and responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships and partnerships with Health Care Providers/Professionals (HCPs), e.g. external Medical Experts, MDT members, study investigators, treatment guideline experts, etc. to ensure the appropriate dissemination of clinical and scientific information regarding Vertex' compounds in a timely, ethical and stakeholder-focused manner. Contribute to shape the medical plan by providing external stakeholders' insights and contribute to the design and execution of the Medical Affairs strategy and pair key stakeholders' scientific educational and research needs with available Vertex resources and provide the latest emerging data in response to specific HCP inquiries, as appropriate.
Key responsibilities:
Lead appropriate identification, mapping and engagement of Thought Leaders and study investigators in alignment with medical strategy
Upon unsolicited requests for information from HCPs, present data on Vertex products, this may include internally globally approved information on compounds in development with no approved indications. When requested provide relevant disease awareness education.
Involve HCPs when a need is identified to provide support/advice/participate in specific medical and scientific activities e.g. advisory boards, education of health care providers, publications, etc.
Develop and foster peer-to-peer, credible relationships with Thought Leaders and other Health Care Professionals.
Upon request liaise between researcher and the Company on possible research opportunities
Scientific Exchange/ Insights
Support scientific exchange to advance understanding of new scientific principles, novel research trends, and current scientific debate
Collect, analyse and report insights from HCPs and external environment to inform and shape medical strategy
Build relationships with relevant medical societies, associations and health care institutions.
Scientific and Product Expertise
Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise in the Therapeutic Area, and in-depth and up to date knowledge of treatment trends, guidelines, Vertex's pipeline, and understanding of the external environment's competitor products, their indications and supporting data, and their pipelines.
Scientific Projects
Contribute to scientific projects according to global, regional or local medical strategies. Examples may include, but not limited to, advisory boards, educational meetings, epidemiology projects, registries, preclinical or translational research, as well as multi-disciplinary projects involving education and collaboration of multiple functions in the medical community to improve patient diagnosis and treatment.
Internal Vertex Contributions
Provide expert disease area and product training to Vertex colleagues (e.g. new MSLs, other medical colleagues, sales and marketing representatives, CRAs) and support coaching and mentoring of MSLs as assigned by manager
Proactively contribute to shape the medical plan by providing external stakeholders' insights and contribute to the design and execution of the Medical Affairs strategy and plan. Independently identifies and communicates business opportunities and threats
Work with cross functional team to ensure alignment across field accounts
Integrity and Compliance
Ensure relevant processes and compliance procedures e.g. Field Medical Guidance, Compliance Handbook are always followed.
Work within Integrity and Compliance policies and ensure those around him/her do the same.
Key requirements:
Pharmacist or MSc or PharmD, PhD, MD
Proven previous experience in a field medical position and activities related to MSL role
Previous experience in Haematology field and/or cell and gene therapy would be highly desirable
Previous experience of developing and fostering peer-to-peer, credible relationships with Medical Experts and other Health Care Professionals
Generates innovative ideas, solutions and creative new ideas to manage short- and long-term business needs
Strong scientific, medical, research and technical expertise and ability to work across therapeutic areas
Ability to understand and effectively convey emergent scientific and HEOR data
Demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills
Must be able to adapt, organize, prioritize, and work effectively on multifunctional teams in a constantly changing field-based environment
Experience providing medical education to external and internal audiences including coaching and mentoring
Familiar with the use of digital medical platforms and evolving digital platforms e.g. for stakeholder mapping, management, development and insights.
Strong personal integrity and focus on stakeholders.
