Purpose Of The Role
BBC Radio Suffolk is right at the heart of the local community. Based in Ipswich we are looking for a Senior Operations Engineer to support the technology used by our production colleagues. You'll be enthusiastic, pro-active and a team player. Happy to work both in and out of the studio. This is a people-facing role, so you'll need strong interpersonal skills, working effectively with colleagues and contacts from both technical and non-technical backgrounds.
Why Join The Team
The Senior Operations Engineer works across every aspect of the station. No day is the same. Working on a local radio station you will be part of a small team that support each other and work together to get things done. You will be the "go to" person for your colleagues on the station for anything technical and as such will be highly-valued and respected.
Your Key Responsibilities And Impact
Based at BBC Radio Suffolk, you will normally be working office hours on weekdays. But as part of the wider BBC East Engineering team, you may be scheduled to work at other times, and provide support on other sites, to meet operational requirements.
As our sole on-site technical support in Ipswich, you will maintain a range of multimedia newsgathering, production, broadcast and IT equipment and offer technical advice to users.
You will be our on-site Outside Broadcast Engineer, helping to plan, organise and engineer events alongside local production teams.
You will report to our Team Leader, Operations Engineering, based in Cambridge.
Your Skills And Experience
Experience of broadcast engineering in a live transmission environment, combined with a good understanding of Broadcast & IT systems. You'll also have experience of planning, organising, rigging and engineering complex outside broadcasts and public-facing events. This role would be ideal for an existing Operations Engineer looking to step up from their current role.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
1. Maintenance and repair of all broadcast facilities at Radio Suffolk.
2. To be the main technical point of contact on site for all production and on-air staff. Various technical facilities, equipment and advice needs to be made available to staff on an on-demand basis.
3. Outside Broadcasts. These vary from simple straightforward inserts right up to complex multi-mic flagship station-wide events.
4. Providing first and second line IT support. This ranges from patching the studio broadcast PCs to rebuilding PCs and laptops as necessary.
5. Proven ability to prioritise tasks according to service impact, and to work calmly under pressure.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
1. Ability to repair down to component level.
2. Able to program the BNCS Scheduler and having an input into local use of the Dira broadcast audio system when required.
3. Experience with planning and engineering complex outside broadcasts.
4. Submitting and approving a wide variety of IT Servicedesk requests.
5. Engineering BBC Introducing sessions which are typically broadcast live on a Thursday evening - sometimes from the studio and sometimes from a live music venue in Suffolk or Norfolk.
If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we'd love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
Before your start date, you may need to disclose any unspent convictions or police charges, in line with our Contracts of Employment policy. This allows us to discuss any support you may need and assess any risks. Failure to disclose may result in the withdrawal of your offer.
