About the job




We're hiring a

Senior PHP Engineer

- someone experienced, inventive, and confident working with headless WordPress in non-traditional ways. This is a high-impact, high-trust role working directly with our CTO and small product team to develop backend services that support our rapidly scaling digital health platform.


You'll design, implement, and maintain custom REST API endpoints in a novel, decoupled WordPress setup that supports critical services for both NHS and private healthcare patients across the UK. It's a rare opportunity to use WordPress far beyond pages and posts - and to solve meaningful problems at scale.

In this role




In this role you will:

Develop and maintain headless WordPress applications using PHP and RESTful APIs Design and implement custom endpoints for the WordPress REST API Create efficient and scalable backend solutions for decoupled WordPress architectures Ensure high performance and security of the headless WordPress setup Collaborate with frontend developers to integrate backend APIs into React and other frameworks Write and maintain documentation for API endpoints and architecture Implement secure authentication protocols such as JWT Optimize data exchange between WordPress and frontend applications

You'll report directly to the CTO and work as part of a small, focused team (engineers, PM, QA, and data). You'll be central to building infrastructure that impacts over

13.5 million patients

across the UK.

Requirements



Strong proficiency in PHP and WordPress development Experience with WordPress REST API and custom endpoint creation Solid understanding of RESTful API principles and best practices Familiarity with headless CMS architectures and decoupled WordPress setups Knowledge of frontend integration with technologies like React Proficiency in Git and version control best practices Solid database skills (MySQL or MariaDB)

Nice to Have



Experience with Docker or containerised dev environments Familiarity with performance tuning and caching strategies for WordPress Understanding of WordPress and API-level security best practices
