Job summary
The Diagnostics and Pathogen Characterisation (DPC) Division is based at Porton and has approximately 150 staff, focusing on key initial steps in the control of infections, namely pathogen identification, characterisation, and development of diagnostics.
The Virology and Pathogenesis Group (V&P) sits in the DPC Division within Science Group. V&P's work focuses on arboviruses, viral haemorrhagic fevers and other emerging zoonotic viruses which cause infections in humans and pose a significant risk to public health. The group's activity corresponds with the institute's status as a WHO Collaborating Centre for virus research and reference (special pathogens) and ranges from the development of diagnostics and surveillance through to the assessment of interventions and vaccines.
The Senior Project Team Leader post will provide specialist management and scientific leadership to the Pathogen Inactivation area within the Virology and Pathogenesis group. Working on hazard group 3 and 4 viruses, the successful candidate will safeguard the delivery of research programmes at containment level 3 and 4 linked to V&P's activity to: improve our understanding of dangerous viruses, guide the development of novel therapies, diagnostics, and vaccines, advance our understanding of infection / pathogenesis and underpin capacity to respond to high threat pathogens. Incumbent to these work programmes will be the continued development of our X-ray irradiation capability within UKHSA.

Job description
Lead and delegate the development of assays requiring CL3 and CL4 from the V&P team, including for virus propagation, isolation, quantification and immune assays
Lead, deliver and maintain currency of a CL3 training programme and provide assistance in the identification and training of suitable candidates for CL4 work
Implement and utilise a range of methods/assays/techniques in support of all activities associated with developing and expanding X-ray irradiation technology for pathogen inactivation, including ensuring project targets are met
Contribute and support the development of externally funded research programmes.
Take responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for project area, ensuring appropriate business justifications are in place
Lead the project team to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate and to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods
Take responsibility for the supervision, training and mentoring of junior staff allocated to the project as required
Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet project targets and for preparation of presentations and publications
To ensure that the project team undertakes work in accordance with applicable UKHSA Safety and Quality systems

Person specification
Essential role criteria:
PhD or equivalent higher qualification and extensive experience in an appropriate virology field
Good knowledge and recent experience of wet virology and containment level 2 and 3
Experience of external collaboration (including international collaboration)
Experience of developing junior staff members, including line management experience
Trained and experience working in containment level 3
Clear communicator with excellent writing skills, report writing, and presentation skills
Evidence of success in efficient and effective project participation and management
Desirable role criteria:
Experience of leading and developing a capability
Recent experience in X-ray irradiation of high consequence pathogens
Track record of successful grant applications
Trained and experienced at working in containment level 4

This role is being offered as hybrid working based at our Scientific Campus in Porton.
We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month).

For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time.
