Job Description

A small research group studying climate change, ocean geochemistry, and deep-sea sediments seeks a Senior Research Technician to support the Godwin Stable Isotope Laboratory within the Department of Earth Sciences.

The role involves operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting stable isotope mass spectrometers, laser spectrometers, CHN analysers, vacuum systems and other laboratory instruments, as well as assisting with sample preparation, data processing, and quality control. The successful applicant will also train users, manage the laboratory sample archive, and help maintain lab infrastructure, including gas supply and vacuum systems.

Applicants should have experience with mass spectrometry and vacuum systems, strong practical, analytical and problem-solving skills, and proficiency in MS Excel. A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific field and experience in a research laboratory are required. Experience with deep-sea core sample processing, including wet sieving and foraminifera picking, as well as programming (Python, R, MATLAB) or instrument method development, would be advantageous but not essential.

Excellent communication, organisation, and teamwork skills are essential. The ability to work independently and adapt to a dynamic research environment is crucial.
