About the Role
NPL is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist based in Teddington to plan and deliver a number of technical activities to take our research to the next level. This full-time job comes with a generous salary and benefits package.
The role will involve developing and conducting techniques for the microstructural characterisation of materials across the length scales, determined with a range of microscopy techniques but particularly in the scanning electron microscope. The ability to relate microstructure to performance is essential. The work can cover a wide range of materials, from nano materials to engineering components and biological materials. Although it is expected that high quality scientific publications will result from this research, a key outcome will be the development of validated measurement procedures for microstructural characterisation that can be used to develop assured data and international standards on materials structure and performance.
What you'll be doing:
  • Developing new and existing microscopy techniques to improve accuracy and reduce uncertainties in microstructural measurements, including EBSD and FIB methods
  • Developing partnerships to strengthen our capability
  • Acting as an ambassador for our work externally and being willing to promote what we do
  • Providing technical support for any bids we may be undertaking
  • Sharing your learnings so that we all benefit and mentoring those with less experience than you
About You
The role will require a science or engineering-related degree and relevant post-graduate studies, with specific knowledge and experience of materials characterisation with scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam milling (FIB-SEM).

  • Experience or postgraduate studies in microstructural characterisation in the SEM

  • Scientific problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Customer focused attitude
We would also welcome the following:
  • Educated to PhD level in engineering/science
  • Knowledge of Focused Ion Beam SEM and EBSD
  • Experience in hardware-software interfacing
  • The ability to produce creative ideas in a R&D environment
