About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Storage Engineer to join a team of highly experienced Networking, Datacentre and Automation engineers which is dedicated to a single client. The team is responsible for maintaining and expanding the Storage systems of a three site High Performance Computing infrastructure. Our high profile client is in the Science industry and has critical uptime and data security requirements. The technologies you will be responsible for are Weka (weka.io) high performance storage and Scality object storage. In the role, you will lead processes and practices to ensure high uptime and service excellence by ensuring sound engineering practices are enshrined throughout the team, as well as by promptly responding to and resolving escalated customer queries, tackling escalated events and incidents as well as undertaking complex BAU operations. The job is primarily desk-based, but may require very occasional travel to datacentres to assist with physical works onsite for large projects. You will be primarily responsible for systems administration functions with a focus on the storage platforms, working with colleagues from Nephos as well as the client to deliver an outstanding HPC managed service, seeking to continuously improve the system status and services offered.
Responsibilities
Lead the storage-focussed systems administration functions within the team (focussed primarily around storage and monitoring, but an interest in networking and compute will be useful for a holistic understanding of the platforms).
Handle escalations in your Subject Matter Expert (SME) area(s).
Liaising with and escalating to vendor support as necessary.
Provide senior SME input in client-facing meetings for your technology area(s).
Mentor more junior colleagues in your SME area(s).
Work as part of a team to provide daily and on-call technical support 24x7x365 on storage, networking and compute, ensuring high availability, performance, and security of data.
Delegate work to other engineers as appropriate, with supporting documentation and processes.
Support the implementation, configuration and ongoing management of the monitoring solution.
Handle escalated Incident and Problem records, apply advanced technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to methodically handle investigation activities, identify issues, restore services as quickly as possible, and maintain updated records.
Help support Major Incidents to ensure they are managed closely from initial response to resolution, including timely communications.
Identify technology or process improvement initiatives for standardisation to streamline, and/or automation opportunities, wherever possible.
Create and maintain up to date knowledge articles, SOPs or work instructions around your area of expertise, to help build a culture for sharing information.
Drive initiatives to improve team efficiency, effectiveness, customer satisfaction and service delivery.
Identify and point out areas needing improvement, maintenance or otherwise "at risk".
Skills & Experience
Core attributes:
Over 10 years of progressive systems administration experience with a focus on storage.
Experience with tiered flash storage systems, such as WEKA.
Experience with Object Storage backend platforms such as Scality RING, and the S3 protocol.
Outstanding understanding of enterprise/HPC storage concepts.
Experience with load balancers, such as VMWare AVI Load Balancer.
Significant experience with Linux platforms and command line tools.
Experience with scripting languages (bash, python, groovy).
Experience with ticketing systems, such as Jira.
Experience with administering monitoring systems such as LogicMonitor.
Familiarity with DCIM tools such as NetBox.
Experience working in a Change Managed environment, and with ITIL processes.
Experience mentoring more junior colleague.
Ability to work in a 24x7 live Production environment.
Additional attributes:
Experience with datacentre networking concepts (clos, leaf/spine, EVPN-VXLAN) and platforms (cumulus) is an advantage.
Experience with automation platforms, such as Ansible, would be an advantage.
