Senior Transmission Design Engineer / Authority

Rugby, Warwickshire, United Kingdom

Job Description

Company Overview

At Motorola Solutions, we believe that everything starts with safety. It\xe2\x80\x99s the constant that empowers people to confidently move forward. It can fill a flight or sell out a stadium. It can care for a patient or graduate a class.

As a global leader in public safety and enterprise security, we create and connect the technologies that help to keep people safe where they live, learn, work and play. Our integrated technology ecosystem unifies critical communications, video security and access control, and command center software, enabling collaboration in more powerful ways.

At Motorola Solutions, we\xe2\x80\x99re ushering in a new era in public safety and security. Bring your passion, potential and talents to a career that matters.

Department Overview The role exists with the Transmission Design team, which is one of the teams with UK Software & Services Core Engineering Design. Within UKS&S we are groups of small teams relying heavily on each other with very little slack or fat in the system. To be as successful as we are, we need to be confident that our own teams and the teams we interact with are all pulling equally and more importantly reliably.

The network is one of the world\'s largest emergency services networks and we have been at the cutting edge of the development of this technology. Innovative solutions have had to be found for complex and unique problems whilst the network has been rolled-out, grown and enhanced, at the same time as maintaining customer service on a live operational system. Solutions have to be found to in-life problems and network growth/enhancement, always within demanding timescales due to the nature of our customers\' operations.

Please note: This role is a Fixed Term Contract for 18 months.

This role is a Hybrid working role. Work split between home working and office working.

The initial purpose of this role is to support a nationwide Access and Core network migration from conventional TDM network operation to IP network and in some cases IP emulated TDM operation. The network migration will be conducted on a regional basis, with regions being migrated sequentially.

The post holder will have responsibility for coming up with new solutions, detailed network design aspects, for managing the actual circuit migration and testing at a technical level and for providing technical support to others involved in the detailed migration activity.

Providing a source of expertise within Motorola for all technical and engineering matters relating to the new Access and core transmission network architecture and to the migration to that new architecture

The review and monitoring of suppliers\xe2\x80\x99 design, implementation and test activities, to ensure the smoothest workflow and the most cost-effective solution conforming to agreed requirements.

The supervision of commissioning and acceptance testing of the network solution to ensure that it is fit for purpose.

Over time, the post holder will also become involved in other aspects of work in the Transmission section. Typically, this would include involvement in microwave and radio site related issues and projects, involvement in development of the core network, in customer control rooms\xe2\x80\x99 issues and in VSAT related issues.

No direct line responsibility for staff, however this role has to lead teams of staff to ensure successful commissioning and testing of migrated circuits.

Peers with PM staff, with the Managers of the staff who are carrying out the commissioning and testing work as well as with external suppliers/contractors.

The use of problem solving abilities to overcome technical problems and the use of innovative and creative thinking to generate and implement solutions for improving the reliability and resilience of the new core transmission network.

The post holder will liaise with Motorola / Airwave customers. For this reason, not only is a high level of technical competence required but also the ability to communicate with people at all levels.

Suppliers: The post holder will regularly meet with Motorola / Airwave\'s suppliers and the suppliers approved contractors. This supplier liaison requires comprehensive specialist technical knowledge but also the ability to understand the commercial relationship with the supplier and to be able to communicate appropriately within this framework.
