Shift Leader

The Role
As Shift Leader, you'll lead daily operations during your shifts, ensuring high standards of care and creating a stable, nurturing home environment. You'll model professional practice, guide your team, and support young people through consistent, child-focused care.

Your Responsibilities
Young Person-Centred Support
Monitor and update Placement Plans and Risk Assessments
Lead meaningful Keywork sessions with assigned young people
Encourage participation in routines, decision-making, and goal setting
Support planning for education, contact, and care reviews
Promote emotional wellbeing through trauma-informed care strategies
Team Leadership & Supervision
Lead 8-12 shifts per month (including sleep-ins)
Deliver effective handovers and assign shift responsibilities
Supervise and mentor support staff, including agency workers
Provide clear guidance and uphold high standards of practice
Safeguarding & Behaviour Monitoring
Respond to and escalate any safeguarding concerns
Complete detailed incident reports and guide team reflection
Monitor risk around CSE, absconding, or peer conflict
Maintain accurate safeguarding logs and behaviour records
Compliance & Record Keeping
Keep thorough records of daily care, medication, and hygiene tasks
Audit keywork sessions, incident reports, and documentation
Review MAR charts and escalate any medication issues
Oversee petty cash, food inventory, and safety logs
Health & Safety
Carry out regular equipment checks and emergency procedures
Maintain cleanliness and safety standards throughout the home
Log maintenance issues and follow up as required
Communication & Reporting
Actively participate in team meetings and shift planning
Provide feedback and support requests to senior management
Share updates on young people's progress with external professionals
Team Development & Learning
Complete all mandatory and refresher training
Lead reflective sessions following significant events
Promote best practice during handovers and team briefings
Support the team's understanding of documentation and plans
Operational Support
Assist with coordinating appointments and household tasks
Track shift spending and manage small budgets
Help plan birthdays, outings, and special activities
Maintain stock of essential household supplies
What You'll Bring
At least 2 years' experience in residential childcare or a related role
Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or currently completing)
Strong team leadership, delegation, and communication skills
Calm, child-centred approach with emotional resilience
Confident in safeguarding procedures and trauma-informed practice
A full UK driving licence is preferred
