Required to join our team of shipwrights refitting the Golden Hinde. Job entails painting, sanding, scraping masts, spars, timbers. Organising dock, timber stock and our ship yard machinery. Supporting shipwrights.

Needs to be practical, happy working outside some of the time, able to use own initiative, follow simple procedures and be part of a small team.

About The Golden Hinde: The Golden Hinde is a faithful reconstruction of the ship in which Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe. Permanently moored on the Thames, she serves as a vibrant museum and educational centre. We are committed to the ongoing preservation and maintenance of this unique historical vessel, ensuring her longevity for future generations.

Job Purpose: We are seeking a practical and proactive Ship Maintenance Labourer to join our dedicated team of shipwrights. This role is crucial in supporting the refitting and ongoing maintenance of The Golden Hinde, ensuring the ship remains in excellent condition. You'll play a hands-on part in preserving a piece of living history.

Key Responsibilities:

Ship Preparation & Maintenance: Perform essential tasks such as painting, sanding, and scraping the ship's masts, spars, and timber surfaces. Assist with the preparation of surfaces for treatment and restoration. Carry out general upkeep and cleaning of the ship's exterior and relevant maintenance areas. Yard & Stock Management: Organise and maintain the dock area, ensuring it is tidy, safe, and efficient for work. Manage and organise timber stock and other materials within our shipyard facilities. Assist with the basic maintenance and organisation of shipyard machinery and tools. Shipwright Support: Provide direct support to the shipwright team, assisting them with various tasks as required during refitting and repair projects. Help with moving materials, setting up work areas, and general labouring to facilitate shipwright operations. Health & Safety: Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations and procedures at all times. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently.
Person Specification:

Essential:

Practical and hands-on ability with a strong work ethic. Comfortable and happy working outside in various weather conditions some of the time. Ability to use own initiative and work unsupervised when necessary, particularly for routine tasks. Capable of following simple procedures and instructions accurately. A team player who can integrate well into a small, close-knit team. Physically capable of performing manual labour, including lifting, bending, and working at heights (with appropriate safety measures).
Desirable:

Previous experience in painting, sanding, or general labouring. An interest in maritime history or traditional craftsmanship. Basic understanding of health and safety in a workshop or shipyard environment.
Working Conditions: This role involves working both on board The Golden Hinde and at associated dockside/shipyard facilities. You will be exposed to varying weather conditions and will need to navigate uneven surfaces, stairs, ladders, scaffolding and potentially confined spaces on the ship. The work is physically demanding and requires a degree of flexibility in tasks.
