Role Overview
Reporting to the Senior Technical Superintendent, and in conjunction with the corresponding Marine Superintendent(s), this role is responsible for the provision of compliant vessels for safe and efficient operations, and line management of the most senior engineer position on board vessels assigned
for direct management.
The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, management, maintenance, and repair of the company's Fleet vessels, ensuring optimal reliability and availability.
This includes overseeing the safe daily operations of maintenance and repair, budgeting, survey schedules, on-board general assessment of vessels, inspections, and docking, ensuring full
compliance with all applicable regulations, coordinating the activities of the crew, and maintaining the vessel in accordance with class and statutory requirements.
As Technical Superintendent you and the Marine Superintendent will be the primary shore based point of contact for the assigned vessels. You are required to provide dedicated support to the vessel on-board management team. Effectively communicating and coordinating with the Marine Superintendent and all other support elements within the Fleet Group to define and progress any required actions to an effective conclusion.
It is also imperative, as the primary point of contact, that timely and effective communication of any issues which may impact on the availability of the vessel, is provided to the Operations Team to allow them to effectively manage any potential impact on the commercial operation of the vessel, in line with agreed service level agreements.
In Summary the Technical Superintendent must fully support the vessels under their direct management, providing maximum vessel availability, within budget, consistent with safe methods of operation through coordination of Fleet Group resource and whilst providing effective communication to the Operations team as the customer.
Principal accountabilities
Responsible for the safe operation and technical reliability of assigned vessels in line with internal standards as developed by the Standards and Performance Department and in
compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. Responsible for vessel maintenance in line with Class and Statutory requirements and for direct correspondence with Classification Society and Flag Administration Surveyors.
Responsible for the control and management of the vessel budget including cost tracking and accurate forecasting in coordination with Finance team.
Responsible for vessel service availability and reliability in line with Service Level Agreements.
Control and monitoring the water, chemical, lube-oil and bunker quality and consumption.
Ensure the assigned vessels are keeping records of the functioning and condition of all instruments and equipment on-board. Using companies planned maintenance and defect reporting systems and mechanisms.
Check all vessels records and documentation including but not limited to engineering logs, safety documentation, certification, technical files, etc. ensuring that contingency plans and other manuals are fully updated.
Monitor the inventories of mooring equipment, safety equipment, lifesaving, firefighting equipment, and portable instruments in collaboration with the Marine Superintendent.
Supporting Crewing with technical advice and guidance on engineering qualifications and manning levels.
Line management of the most senior engineer position on board assigned vessels in accordance with line management matrix.
Responsible for overhaul planning, execution, and subsequent return to service of vessels within the fleet.
Compile and provide documented reports upon completion of dry docking, including summaries of works performed, operational budgets, and actual expenditures.
Responsible for ensuring that all technical incidents, defects, and audit findings are investigated and analysed, and corrective action is effectively implemented.
Provide management cover of other vessels within the Fleet Group , as required to support colleagues during events such as sickness, annual leave, overhauls etc.
Active participation in reviewing the Company Management System, in collaboration with the vessel's crew, to drive continual improvement and enhancement of policies and
procedures. Accountable to the Senior Technical Superintendent - Small Vessels
Required to liaise with Head of Fleet, Senior Technical Superintendent and internal customers on technical and operational matters including vessel performance etc.
Provide out of hours duty on call cover for the vessels based on a duty rota.
Undertake any other Technical related assignments as and when required.
As a member of one or more Emergency Response teams, it is expected that exercises are attended, annual leave is communicated with deputies assigned and full familiarisation is maintained with the relevant emergency response procedures and protocols.
Prior to, during and following vessel visits:
Proactively supply to the vessel an agenda of items to be discussed.
Carry out inspections to ensure standards on board are maintained.
Supervise repairs and provide advice to contractors and vessel's crew during maintenance.
Ensure vessels' operational status and standards required by Statutory bodies and Classification Societies are maintained.
Compile and provide documented reports upon completion of inspections, including summaries of vessel condition, crew morale and any additional new defects identified during the inspection and the associated remedial actions agreed with the vessel's crew.
Strategic Direction
Ensure clear understanding of the goals of the Fleet Management Team, how this team impact on the Wider business and how your role and those of your colleagues in the Fleet Group can impact on the achievement of these goals.
Build confidence and credibility with the vessel's crew by developing and maintaining frequent direct interaction opportunities, including video and telephone calls/meeting, on board inspection and attendance during the overhaul periods.
Establish a detailed knowledge of the vessels under your direct management.
Proactively liaise with the other Technical Superintendents in both Fleets to ensure information, knowledge and skills are share and utilised optimally.
Proactive management of support to the vessels utilising the resources and skills within the Fleet Group . Ensuring effective delegation of tasks and follow up to ensure
completion within the agreed timescale and to the required standard. Monitor and analyse performance, provide proactive suggestions for improvement where needed.
Strive for excellence in all areas of operation through compliance and by optimising the utilisation of resource.
Stakeholder Management
Build positive relationships with other teams throughout the wider business, including but not limited to Operations, Crewing, Procurement, Finance, Shore Support and Logistics.

Work closely with Performance and Standards as well as Operations to ensure safe and efficient vessel management.
Work with Procurement and Supply Chain Management to ensure availability of necessary spares for vessel management.

Ensure total understanding and awareness of KPIs and provide constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement in the KPI process.

Budget Responsibility
Work collaboratively with the vessel's crew, Finance team and other stakeholders to create a realistic and achievable annual operational and overhaul budget for each vessel.
Detailed management and tracking of expenditure for review during monthly finance review meetings, including unbudgeted costs which may be applicable for Non-CHFS recovery.
Provide input to forecasting of expenditure as part of financial reporting.
Meet defined deadlines for financial reporting and be prepared to present cases for extraordinary expenditure items either budgeted or unbudgeted.
Timely submission of orders for long lead time items required for in service or overhaul maintenance.
Work with the vessels and Logistics team to ensure effective management of stock levels on board and in Faulds Park Warehouse.
Effective management of purchase orders and financial records relating to warranty and insurance claims.
Close collaboration with Procurement and Logistics teams to ensure optimisation of service and suppliers.

Personnel Management
Contribute towards succession planning for mariners, which may include identifying and interviewing suitably qualified and competent Engineering Officers and Ratings. This will be
in conjunction with the Crewing team and Human Resource Department. Complete Performance Appraisal and any other HR related functions associated with the most senior engineer position on board.
Conduct general personnel management functions for assigned crew which may include, but not be limited to, absence/grievance/performance management - in accordance with line management matrix.
Qualifications
Preference would be an STCW III/2 Chief Engineer (no limitations), equivalent or higher qualification. Candidates with lower qualifications who can demonstrate knowledge and experience with Ro-Ro vessels would be considered.
Understanding of vessel specifications and requirements.
Understanding of marine regulations, classification rules, guidance, industry best practice and quality standards
Be able to demonstrate a high level of competence in all aspects of Ro-Ro vessel and marine operations, including technical maintenance and overhaul overhauls/dockings and projects.
Be able to demonstrate experience of specification writing and budget planning.
Be able to demonstrate an ability to foster close professional working relationships both internally and with external stakeholders.
