Job Description

We are looking for a reliable and culturally competent

Somali Language Interpreter

to provide professional interpreting services between

Somali and English

in a variety of settings. This role is crucial in helping non-English-speaking individuals, particularly members of the Somali community, access vital services across healthcare, legal, education, social care, and community sectors. The interpreter will ensure that communication is accurate, respectful, and sensitive to cultural differences.

Main Responsibilities:



Provide

face-to-face, telephone, and video interpreting

between Somali and English in public and private sector settings. Interpret clearly and accurately, conveying meaning, tone, and intent without personal bias. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the

Code of Conduct for Interpreters

. Support service users in understanding their rights, responsibilities, and the information provided. Translate or sight-translate simple written materials, such as appointment letters, consent forms, or service information. Prepare for interpreting assignments by researching relevant terminology and subject matter. Build rapport with clients while maintaining professional boundaries.

Person Specification:



Essential:



Fluent in both

Somali and English

(spoken and written). Understanding of Somali dialects and cultural nuances. Prior experience as an interpreter in community, healthcare, or legal settings. Strong communication and active listening skills. Ability to remain impartial, calm, and professional in sensitive situations. Commitment to upholding confidentiality and ethical standards.

Desirable:



Interpreting qualification (e.g.

Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting

,

DPSI

, or equivalent). Registration with a recognised interpreting body (e.g.

NRPSI

,

CIoL

, or

ITI

). Experience interpreting for the

NHS

, local authorities, or refugee and asylum services. Knowledge of safeguarding and equality principles.

Additional Information:



Flexible working hours - assignments may include evenings or weekends. Travel within the local region may be required. An

enhanced DBS check

will be required prior to starting work. You must have the
