SOS Project - Ending Gang Violence and Exploitation




SOS project works across the country in areas affected by criminal gangs. Our staff work with both victims and perpetrators of serious youth violence and other gang related offences. We help our clients to:

We do this by:

Helping our clients understand their own behaviour and its consequences Promoting change Working with other support services, including enforcement Providing practical help such as housing support Helping our clients' families to support them
Our staff work in a range of locations:

Embedded in local authority multi-agency gangs teams. In hospitals In community settings such as youth centres
People can't be helped from behind a desk- so a lot of time is spent with our clients in the places they know. The best results come from partnership working, so staff work closely with a range of agencies to get the best outcomes for their clients. Our aim is to see our clients using mainstream community based services to get what they need- SOS is a bridging service that helps people to access that support and services.


The casework services run primarily Monday to Friday in office hours, though there may be some late or early appointments or out of office hours shifts as required. You will be part of a comprehensive, high quality and client focused SOS Team delivering across St Giles Trust that is mindful of, and promotes the organisation's Vision, Mission, Values and strategic aims.

(1) Key Deliverables

Providing young person centred holistic support in line with St Giles service delivery model and as part of a flexible multi-agency team Conduct robust risk assessments and strengths-based needs assessments, with safeguarding as the priority, ensuring that the most appropriate intervention is offered and risks are managed and escalated appropriately. To ensure that all young people work towards an agreed support plan which is regularly reviewed and adapted to ensure that they meet their individual needs and goals To build effective and engaging relationships with young people involved in or at risk of being involved in the criminal justice system and improving their life chances. To build links with agencies providing services to the client group, to be aware of referral routes and to actively promote good partnerships and effective joint working. This will include offering local support to clients to engage in positive activity within the community (i.e. boxing, football etc.) To participate in team meetings, professional meetings (such as strategy meetings and child protection conferences), presenting information in a clear and concise manner. To develop and maintain relationships with referral agencies, including police, Youth Offending Teams, Integrated Offender Management, Prison / Young Offender Institutions and local authorities, ensuring a steady flow of appropriate referrals onto the scheme. To liaise closely with other St Giles teams with reference to referrals, avoiding duplication. Identify any other needs of the young person / family members and refer into appropriate services / co-ordinate support as required. To develop and maintain relationships with regional agencies, including police and social services, in areas where identified county lines activity is taking place. To deliver educational sessions and workshops within schools, alternative provisions, etc., for both staff and students around violence and exploitation and related topics. To deliver a holistic support service working independently or with colleagues as the situation dictates; providing a practical service that will include social support, housing support, accompanying to appointments, education, training and employment options, benefits work, debt advice, assistance obtaining furniture, liaising with utilities, appearing in court, DIY work and cleaning. To close cases efficiently and positively, identifying a survival plan for the client that will identify agencies that can be used for on-going support and agencies that can be used if serious problems develop in the future. To promote the value of lifestyle changes to the client group. To assist with providing monitoring information and the evaluation of the project. Recording case information fully, accurately and professionally as well complying with contract reporting requirements and St Giles internal standards, interacting with multiple case management systems and producing all written notes/reports in a timely manner. Engage young people through detached work on identified estates, youth centres, etc., in partnership with targeted youth support and other community based services. Act in accordance with safeguarding legislation and guidance in addition to St Giles policies and procedures including safeguarding, risk management, lone working, GDPR, and diversity & inclusion. Attend and engage positively with mandatory training as required. Demonstrate a commitment to your ongoing learning and personal development by undertaking additional training that is relevant to your role and the needs of the service. Working flexibly within the community and within identified office spaces within London (opportunities for home working will be minimal within this role). Carry out any other duties as required and commensurate with the level of this post and working flexibly to meet the demands of this service

Skills and Experience



Significant experience of working with children, young people and/or vulnerable adults and delivering interventions that have had a positive impact (A) Experience working with children, young people and/or vulnerable adults in a health and wellbeing context and/or on an offender led support project Experience of providing support, advice and advocacy and the ability to assess client's needs (A) Extensive experience of managing complex safeguarding issues with children, young people and adults who are at risk of violence or exploitation whilst working alone (A) Experience of supporting children, young people, vulnerable adults within the context of complex multiagency professional networks (A) Extensive knowledge of the impact of context on children, young people, and adults - with a clear understanding of the principles of contextual safeguarding (A) Ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with young people and their, parents/carers who may have had previous negative experiences of services (A) Recognition of the importance of resilience in coping with the emotional demands of the role and demonstrable experience of managing your own wellbeing (A) Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal (A) IT literate (Excel, Outlook, Word etc.) and experience of using electronic case management systems to record all aspects of the role, including action plans, outcomes and session data on a day-to-day basis (A) ####

Knowledge



A thorough knowledge and understanding of the physical, social, emotional and developmental needs of children and young people (A) Knowledge of the specific needs of young people as they transition into legal adulthood (A) Understanding of the issues faced by young people such as exploitation, victimisation, offending, school exclusion, unemployment, trauma (A) Knowledge of best practice around contextual safeguarding and those experiencing harm outside the home (A) Knowledge of trauma-informed practice in the context of working with children, young people and parents/carer impacted by violence and exploitation and of how trauma -including from their own lives - can impact on how practitioners manage cases (A) Working knowledge of child protection and safeguarding legislation and policy and substantial experience of providing support, advice and advocacy to staff with a safeguarding responsibility (A) Knowledge of best practice in and understanding of the importance of good quality case recording quality assurance principles (A) ####

Qualifications



Relevant qualification at Level 3 or above in youth work, social work, social sciences, education or another relevant field or demonstrable equivalent experience. (A) Relevant accredited training such as safeguarding, counselling, mental health first aid or other relevant topics ####
