Job Overview


We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Special Needs Co-ordinator to join LDT on a Part-Time SLA Contract to support learners

Main Purpose



The SENCO, under the direction of the Educational Pathways Manager will:

Determine the strategic development of special educational needs (SEN) policy and provision across LD Training Services Ltd. Be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the SEN policy and the coordination of specific provision to support learners with SEN or disabilities. Provide professional guidance to colleagues, working closely with staff, parents, and external agencies. Fulfil the responsibilities of an educator, ensuring high-quality provision for learners with SEN. Ensure the oversight and management of provisions for learners with SEN, while class educators remain responsible for their daily education and support.

Duties and Responsibilities



Strategic Development of SEN Policy and Provision



Develop a strategic overview of SEN and disability provision across LD Training, ensuring quality and effectiveness. Contribute to self-evaluation, particularly in relation to provision for learners with SEN. Ensure that the SEN policy is implemented and that its objectives align with LD Training's overall improvement plan. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national and local SEN initiatives. Evaluate the effective use of funding for SEN support and suggest improvements where necessary.

Operation of the SEN Policy and Coordination of Provision



Maintain an accurate SEND register and provision map. Provide guidance on teaching strategies and the graduated approach to SEN support. Advise on budget use and staff deployment to effectively meet learner needs. Be aware of local SEN provisions and work with other educational institutions, health professionals, and external agencies. Act as the primary contact for external agencies, especially local authorities. Analyse assessment data for learners with SEN. Implement and lead intervention programmes and evaluate their effectiveness. Ensure effective identification and coordination of support for learners with SEN. Secure appropriate services and ensure records are updated and maintained. Lead the review process for Education, Health, and Care (EHC) plans in collaboration with parents, carers, and learners. Communicate regularly with parents/carers to ensure engagement in their child's education. Support the smooth transition of learners with SEN when moving to a higher programme within LD Training or other institutions. Promote inclusion and access to the curriculum, facilities, and extra-curricular activities. Work alongside designated staff responsible for looked-after children (LAC) with SEN.

Leadership and Management



Ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010 in terms of reasonable adjustments and access arrangements. Prepare and review required reports for the governing board. Contribute to whole-organisation policies and improvement plans. Identify staff training needs and deliver INSET sessions for professional development. Foster an inclusive ethos and culture that supports the SEN policy. Lead and manage teaching assistants working with learners with SEN.

Safeguarding



Collaborate with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) on matters of welfare for learners with SEN. Remain vigilant to the increased safeguarding risks for learners with SEN. Ensure adherence to all safeguarding policies and staff conduct codes.

Professional Responsibilities



Implement, monitor, and evaluate tracking tools that measure learners' academic, social, and emotional progress. Deliver high-quality teaching and learning to learners with SEN and support colleagues in achieving best practices. Guide teaching assistants to enhance their support for learners with SEN. Ensure compliance with statutory assessments and submit required information within set timeframes. Organise and conduct Annual Reviews for learners with EHC plans. Work alongside leadership to maintain high-quality intervention programmes for SEN learners. Provide training to colleagues and monitor its effectiveness in supporting SEN learners. Oversee the acquisition and use of SEN-related resources. Foster positive relationships with parents/carers and external support agencies. Stay updated with current developments in SEN education and attend relevant training. Attend leadership meetings to ensure SEN remains a priority.

Demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and effective leadership in working with colleagues, parents, and external stakeholders. Pursue continuous professional development and remain informed about national and international education trends. Advocate for best practices in SEN provision and contribute to strategic planning.

General Duties



Attend meetings and contribute to organisational planning. Establish strong relationships with colleagues and provide leadership in SEN provision. Undertake other reasonable responsibilities as directed by senior management.

Essential Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Degree in a relevant subject
*National Award for SEN Co-ordination (or willingness to complete within 3 years)

Evidence of professional development in SEND
Relevant Experience

Proven ability to demonstrate high-quality teaching, ensuring excellent learner progress
*Thorough understanding of the SEND Code of Practice and best practices for supporting learners with SEND

*Experience in teaching learners with a range of additional needs

*Successful secondary teaching experience

Experience managing a team of staff
Experience in monitoring, assessing, and providing feedback to improve teaching and learning outcomes
Desirable

*Experience delivering CPD related to SEND

Experience of teaching across multiple key stages
*Experience of supporting alternative KS4 pathways

Skills and Knowledge



Clear understanding of current curriculum and assessment requirements, particularly in relation to SEND
Knowledge of safeguarding regulations and best practices in forming appropriate relationships with learners
*Working knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and statutory requirements

Ability to analyse assessment data and use it to inform SEN provision
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, parents, and external agencies
*Strong organisational and time management skills

Knowledge of local SEND provisions and services
Knowledge of alternative KS4 pathways and post-16 opportunities

*To support children with special educational needs and their families. This role involves working closely with children, educators, and parents to ensure that every child receives the appropriate resources and support they require to thrive. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in special education, mentoring, and behaviour management, along with excellent communication skills.

Duties



Advocate for the rights and needs of children with special educational requirements. Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and parents to develop tailored educational plans. Provide mentoring and support to children in various settings, including preschool and childcare environments. Assist in behaviour management strategies to promote positive interactions and learning experiences. Facilitate communication between families and educational institutions to ensure clarity of expectations and resources. Offer tutoring in subjects such as maths, as well as support for speech therapy when necessary. Engage in toddler care activities that promote developmental milestones. Monitor progress and adapt strategies as needed to meet individual child needs.

Qualifications



Proven experience in special education or related fields such as childcare or preschool settings. Strong skills in mentoring, behaviour management, and effective communication. Familiarity with speech therapy practices is advantageous. Ability to work collaboratively with families, educators, and other professionals. Passion for supporting children with special needs and a commitment to their development. Relevant qualifications or certifications in special education or related disciplines are preferred but not mandatory.
