Lewisham Hospital is looking for additional members to join our established group of Specialist Screening Practitioners. You will need to be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as enjoy being part of a team. You do not need to have experience as a Specialist Screening Practitioner as training will be provided.
The role is part of the National Bowel Screening Programme and is subject to significant national clinical audit. Successful applicants will need to have good IT skills and specific systems training will be given. Part of becoming an SSP is to attend Liverpool John Moore's University and undertake the Specialist Screening Practitioner course; this will be arranged within 12 months of joining the SELBCSC.
Potential candidates should be RN qualified with a minimum of 2 years previous experience at Band 5. Areas of knowledge should include the management of colorectal disease, knowledge of the cancer patient pathway and advanced communication skills. Experience in endoscopy and health promotion would be an advantage. Potential candidates will be expected to manage and prioritise their own clinical workload and work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
As a Specialist Screening Practitioner, you will be expected to support patients through all aspects of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Specialist Screening Practitioners are responsible for conducting patient assessment (including medical history), providing information to patients, preparing patients for endoscopic investigations, coordinating specific individual care and acting as the patient advocate.
The South East London Bowel Screening Centre (SELBCSC) is based at Lewisham Hospital. It delivers Bowel Cancer Screening to residents aged 50 -74 of Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley CCG.

To play a pivotal role in supporting the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme
Co-ordinating and providing care from the screening centre to address the needs of the individuals arising as a consequence of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme faecal immunochemical test (FIT Test) and Lynch Syndrome Surveillance.
Acting as the patient's advocate, supporting them to navigate and make informed choices at all stages of the screening process.
Working collaboratively with the London Programme Hub
Assisting with health promotion activities with local health promotion services to improve access to screening by all sections of society
Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colorectal teams across the South East London Bowel Cancer Screening Service, currently provided at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust
