Job description

As part of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Support Service the Hearing Support Team, supports children aged 0 to 25 with hearing loss at home, in settings, schools and colleges across Leicester City.

We aim to make sure that every child in Leicester has access to the education they need. Working closely with our colleagues, you can help us in removing any barriers to education, travelling to various sites across the city, such as homes, settings and schools to support staff to see children and provide training where needed. You will advise families and school staff on the impact of hearing loss, audiological equipment, language and communication and access to learning and inclusion. You will also support the children and young people with our Preparing for Adulthood curriculum. You will build strong, long-lasting relationships with students and their school and home support system.

This is a full time 33.75 hours per week term time post.

Your Role

As a confident and caring Teaching Assistant, you'll support children and young people with hearing loss, offering advice and support to families and school staff. With a caseload of children and young people, you will deliver direct support, using techniques and interventions as appropriate to support their holistic development. Using excellent interpersonal skills, you'll work closely with other professionals, to promote and support the successful inclusion of children and young people.

You will be expected to travel to different sites across the city.

What you'll need

You will need a significant experience of working in schools or settings with children and young people with hearing loss and/or additional SEND. You'll be able to plan and provide specialist support to children and young people allowing them to access education at an appropriate level for their language and communication levels by modifying and adapting learning activities as appropriate.

Using your expertise, you will be able to advise school staff on effective deaf awareness strategies to aid inclusion, provide support to staff within schools/settings and work in partnership with the NHS and other professionals. With the ability to work both as part of team and independently, you'll be able to manage your own workload, work under pressure and respond positively to potentially challenging situations. The ability to be flexible and maintain an excellent sense of humour is essential.

You will also hold GCSEs in Maths and English and a Level 3 qualification in childcare or equivalent qualification/experience.

We will assist you to complete a DBS check.
