An inclusive school in Whitehaven is seeking a caring and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to support pupils with speech, language and communication needs. This rewarding role offers the chance to work closely with children with ASD, speech delays and communication challenges--supporting them to express themselves, build confidence and thrive within the classroom.
The Role
You will play a central part in the support network around each child, working closely with class teachers and the speech and language therapist to:
Deliver personalised strategies that develop speech and language skills
Support communication using tools like Makaton and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
Build social and emotional skills through calm, structured routines
Help pupils engage positively in lessons, both 1:1 and in small groups
Adapt communication approaches to meet individual needs across the school day
Foster a learning environment where every child feels heard, respected and understood
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will bring warmth, adaptability and a strong understanding of children's communication needs. We are looking for someone who:
Holds a relevant qualification (Level?2 or above) in Teaching Assistance, Health and Social Care, Early Years or a related field
Has experience working with speech and language needs (desirable)
Is familiar with Makaton or AAC, or open to learning these tools
Understands the challenges faced by pupils with ASD and other communication differences
Is empathetic, patient and proactive in supporting pupils to overcome barriers
Communicates well with children, colleagues and outside professionals
Is passionate about SEND and committed to inclusive, child?centred practice

Working Hours
Monday to Friday, 8.30?am to 3.30?pm

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
