To work as a member of the Speech & Language Therapy team (SALT) at CFNC to deliver treatment programmes to patients with communication and swallowing difficulties as a result of acquired neurological conditions, including brain injury. The post holder will be responsible for their own caseload of patients and will carry out therapy programmes supervised by the SALT team to individual and groups of patients.
To support administration tasks required by the SALT team.
Design and prepare therapy materials, as required.
To support the oral care programme at CFNC.
KEY RESULT AREAS
To provide support to Speech & Language Therapists working at CFNC in delivering SALT services to adults with acquired brain injuries.
Independently prioritise and manage own workload in consultation with relevant SALTs
To plan and undertake direct therapy programmes to both individual residents and in group settings, within the clinical objectives set by the SALT
To form motivating relationships with residents to achieve positive therapy outcomes
To feedback on progress at agreed intervals to the SALT managing the resident
To notify SALT if programme and therapy objectives are not being met and suggest modifications
To maintain records of therapy sessions
To provide routine advice and support related to the therapy programme for families and carers of adults who are undergoing rehabilitation
To contribute to joint therapy sessions with other Health Care Professionals
To design and prepare clinical materials and communication charts/books using IT and word processing.
To make video recordings and take photographs of clients within framework of GDPR policy, edit as required and upload under the direction of SALTs
To provide day to day administrative support to SALTs as required
To use the Internet. E.g. For evidence based practice/therapy materials
To undertake training to develop professional competencies in order to meet standards required to deliver therapy programmes
To work with all members of the wider MDT team as appropriate, in the provision of Speech and Language Therapy interventions
To be aware of and adhere to multi-disciplinary planning and policy.
To maintain therapy equipment inventories and request new equipment as appropriate, in particular related to eating & drinking and oral care supplies
To observe all CFNC policies and procedures
To maintain up to date and accurate written records
To support the co-ordination of dental appointments and communicate recommendations to relevant parties and ensure recommendations are followed
To undertake all reasonable duties which may be required within the framework of this post as determined by the needs of the CFNC, in consultation with the post holder
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
To work under the direction of Speech and Language Therapists at CFNC
To work collaboratively with Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Nurses, activity co-ordinators and Carers at CFNC in order to provide high quality services to residents
To be clear about own and Speech and Language Therapists professional boundaries
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT
To undertake activities that require intense physical effort e.g. re-positioning or manoeuvring wheelchairs, containing patients that can weigh in excess of 20 stone
To sensitively deal with patients with challenging behaviour, distressed relatives and carers
To work within a wide range of locations and environments with differing demands and expectations (E.g. being flexible about where to treat patients when there is limited space, carrying out sessions in the presence of anxious and emotional family members, treating patients with attention difficulties in noisy areas)
Sitting in restricted positions while delivering therapy
To work in frequently unpleasant conditions and occasionally highly unpleasant conditions eg. infectious illnesses, poor hygiene levels, bodily fluids, verbal aggression
