The Spray Shop Team Lead is responsible for supervising and coordinating all activities within the spray shop, ensuring that production targets, quality standards, safety requirements, and delivery schedules are consistently achieved. This role involves leading the spray operators, maintaining equipment, monitoring processes, and ensuring continuous improvement in efficiency and quality
The role requires you to inspect, prepare, spray and finish to a high standard therefore you should have a minimum experience of at least 3-5 years in a preparation/spraying environment, we manufacturer timber commercial and residential doorsets and are looking for an experienced Sprayer/Finisher to lead our finishing area.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Supervision
Lead, motivate, and manage a team of spray operators, providing clear direction and support.
Plan, organize, and allocate daily workloads to meet production schedules.
Train and develop team members in spray coating techniques, safety, and quality procedures.
Conduct performance reviews and address disciplinary issues when required.
Production & Quality Control
Ensure all spraying activities meet product specifications, surface finish requirements, and quality standards.
Monitor spray booth operations, including preparation, coating, curing, and finishing processes.
Perform in-process inspections and ensure corrective actions are taken when defects occur.
Work closely with Quality Assurance to implement and maintain quality control procedures.
Preparation of timber and MDF components using Water based paints and lacquers
Health, Safety & Compliance
Enforce workplace safety policies, including proper use of PPE, safe handling of chemicals, and ventilation requirements.
Ensure compliance with environmental and occupational health regulations related to spray painting operations.
Report and investigate accidents, near-misses, and unsafe practices.
Maintenance & Continuous Improvement
Oversee maintenance and cleanliness of spray booths, guns, mixing rooms, and related equipment.
Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate with maintenance teams for repairs.
Recommend and implement process improvements to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and enhance product quality.
Manage inventory of coatings, thinners, and consumables, ensuring stock levels meet production needs.
Reporting & Communication
Track production output, waste levels, rework rates, and downtime.
Prepare daily/weekly reports on performance, quality, and productivity.
Communicate effectively with other departments (production planning, Projects, maintenance, quality) to resolve issues.
Person Specification - Essential
The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years' experience in paint spraying to a high standard
Experience in spray painting, powder coating, or finishing processes within a manufacturing environment.
Proven supervisory or leadership experience, preferably in a production or workshop setting
Strong knowledge of spray-painting equipment, techniques, and quality standards
Understanding of HSE regulations and best practices for working with paints, coatings, and chemicals
Experience working within a fast-passed production environment
Excellent attention to detail
Strong communication skills
Past carpentry experiences a real advantage
Ability to work independently, or within a team
Experience driving a forklift (Counterbalance, Flexi, Combi Lift) is a positive
PC literate

Preferred Qualifications
NVQ / Diploma / Technical Certificate in Manufacturing, Coatings, or related field.
Experience with lean manufacturing, 5S, or continuous improvement initiatives.
Forklift or material handling certification (if applicable).
Working Conditions
Factory/production environment with exposure to paints, solvents, and coatings.
Requirement to wear PPE (respirators, protective clothing, gloves, etc.).
Shift work or overtime may be required depending on production demand.
