Job Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

MANAGEMENT / LEADERSHIP Be capable and willing to do staff rota, ensuring correct staffing levels and skill mix Develops role of clinical team leader Coordinates shifts Ensures stock levels are maintained and orders stock as required Is prepared to undertake link nurse responsibilities CLINICAL Actively participates as an effective team member / leader, contributing to the efficient running of the Haemodialysis Unit Develops, promotes and implements research based practice including guidelines from relevant areas e.g. The Renal Association, The Renal National Service Framework and The National Institute for Clinical Excellence Able to work in other areas within the renal unit, as required to maintain a high quality service Able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of individual renal patients (including Level 1 patients who may require additional support) Maintains a working knowledge of preparing and implementing haemodialysis Maintains a working knowledge of peritoneal dialysis Negotiates effective nutrition / fluid intake with the patient in conjunction with other relevant members of the MDT If qualified undertakes fluid assessments on individual patients and prescribes dialysate / peritoneal dialysis fluid as per protocol or autonomously where required Covers on call Acute dialysis as required, and provides out of hours specialist advice to patients at home Acts a clinical resource for specialist dialysis related procedures e.g. acute dialysis, blood volume monitoring, single needle dialysis and plasma exchange Enables patients and their families to understand renal failure and its treatment, and to gain access to further psycho-social support as required Helps and supports a patient transferring between modalities / locations Enables patients to make an informed choice regarding renal replacement therapies / conservative management Builds a partnership between the team, patients and carers Acts as an advocate for the patient, relatives and staff
