Position: Statistical Research Officer
AO Pay Rate: 19.59 per hour
Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week
Hours of Work: 9 to 5 Monday to Friday
Start Date: ASAP
Location: Rathkeltair House, Market Street, Downpatrick, BT30 6AJ

Job Duties:
Marine and Fisheries Division (MFD) part of the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA)is responsible for the promotion, protection, enhancement and sustainable use of:
  • All fish stocks inland and at sea (including aquaculture and fish health); and
  • The marine environment
MFD provides lead policy advice to the DAERA Minister in respect of the marine environment, inland and sea fisheries, aquaculture and fish health.
The role supports MFD by collecting, analysing, and reporting sea fisheries data to inform policy and operational decisions. It sits within the Sea Fisheries Systems, Data and Reporting Team.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
  • Review and improve data processes and systems for sea fisheries.
  • Design and implement data collection methods.
  • Validate, clean, and manage fisheries data.
  • Analyse data to identify trends and support decision-making.
  • Produce statistical reports and collaborate with internal teams.
  • Ensure data is accessible via the Information Hub.
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations and support legislative implementation.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including DEFRA, industry, and other government bodies.
  • Solve complex data issues and ensure quality assurance.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
Essential Criteria:
  • 5 GCSE's including Maths and English
  • A degree
Desirable Experience:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High accuracy, attention to detail, and discretion.
  • Excellent organisational and planning abilities to manage competing deadlines.
  • Experience handling and validating sea fisheries data.
  • Proficiency in IT databases used for monitoring and analysing fisheries data.
  • A full driving licence is required due to potential travel across Northern Ireland.
