Student Adviser (maternity Cover)

Edinburgh, SCT, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

We are looking for a full-time Student Adviser with knowledge of student wellbeing and support to provide maternity leave cover on the Student Advice and Support Team of the School of Social and Political Science.

The Opportunity:

You will provide a first contact point for students within the School, providing guidance and support to those navigating the University support systems. You will use skills, knowledge and empathy in order to ensure every student assigned to you is supported in their induction onto their programme and at key study transitions, at any difficult points in their study journey or personal circumstances, and that they are encouraged to benefit from the wider ecosystem of student support and opportunity at the University.

You may be giving support or advice around student finance, illness and other special circumstances, academic progression, student conduct, and disability adjustments. You will resolve many issues directly by advising the student on process or options, and will signpost and make referrals or facilitate access to more specialist support when required, both within the School and across wider University specialist services, including in cases of urgent or complex health and wellbeing concerns.

This post is fixed-term (from 1 August 2025 for 14 months) and full-time (35 hours per week).

As this post is providing support to students it requires regular on-campus working.

The salary for this post is at Grade UE06: 34,132 - 39,355 per annum.

Your skills and attributes for success:

HNC/HND or equivalent level qualifications plus relevant work experience, or broader experience, acquired through a combination of job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience, demonstrating development through involvement in progressively more demanding relevant work/roles. Knowledge of and sensitivity to the complex areas of student wellbeing and support. Excellent interpersonal skills - remaining calm under pressure, being able to provide a safe and welcoming space for students in distress. Excellent active listening skills and communication skills. Sound analytical and pragmatic problem-solving skills.
