The Opportunity:



We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Substation Protection Engineer to join our dynamic team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure projects, ensuring the safety and reliability of the UK's electricity transmission and distribution networks. You will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and maintaining protection systems for high-voltage substations.

Key Responsibilities:



Design and specify protection schemes for new and existing high-voltage substations (up to 400kV). Perform protection coordination studies, fault level calculations, and relay settings. Develop technical specifications, reports, and drawings for protection systems. Conduct FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) of protection relays and schemes. Provide technical support and expertise during the commissioning phase of substation projects. Liaise with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure project delivery is on time and within budget. Troubleshoot and resolve complex protection-related issues. Ensure all designs and work comply with relevant national and international standards (e.g., ENA, IEC, BS). Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes and standards.

Undertake site visits as required, which may involve travel across the UK.


What You'll Bring:



A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Proven experience as a Protection Engineer within the power industry, specifically with high-voltage substations in the UK. In-depth knowledge of various protection relay types and manufacturers (e.g., Siemens, GE, ABB, Schneider Electric). Strong understanding of protection philosophies, schemes, and associated calculations (e.g., impedance, differential, overcurrent). Proficiency in protection software tools (e.g., PSS/E, ETAP, PSCAD, DIGSILENT, PowerFactory, or similar). Familiarity with UK grid codes and utility standards (e.g., National Grid, DNOs). Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Full, clean UK driving license is important, as the role will involve travel to various sites.

Flexibility and willingness to relocate to different parts of the UK as project requirements dictate.

Chartered Engineer status or working towards it is highly desirable.
