We have an exciting opportunity in the Multidisciplinary Engineering Education (MEE) Department for someone with a passion for practical engineering education.



Working in the state of the art 20,000m Diamond Building, you'll be inspired by what we can offer our Engineering students. We have world leading facilities in teaching and learning, with 15 specialist laboratories designed to create a fantastic place for interdisciplinary engineering education. Within the Faculty of Engineering, one of the biggest and best engineering faculties in the UK, sits MEE, an innovative teaching group providing students with the opportunity to realise their full potential as engineering leaders with employable skills.


We are seeking a capable, highly motivated and enthusiastic multidisciplinary engineering technician to join our dynamic teaching team. You will work with colleagues to support practical teaching in the Aerospace, Civil and Mechanical Engineering theme.

Main duties and responsibilities

Support the delivery of practical education to undergraduate students. Support the team to ensure facilities are run effectively and efficiently, providing a consistently high student experience. Prepare engineering materials and equipment for practical teaching activities. Order equipment and workshop consumables, ensuring that stock levels are maintained as required. Advise and assist students in project classes, small groups, and in one-to-one training sessions, ensuring a strong emphasis on Health and Safety is maintained. Help with the organisation of, set-up, maintenance, servicing, calibration, and repair of teaching equipment. Alongside others, carry out and document risk assessments on student and staff activities, and liaise with appropriate staff to ensure compliance with legislation and University policy. Interpret technical documentation for workshop equipment, experimental procedures, and safety protocols within the theme. Support the training of Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs). Alongside others, take an active role in the delivery of outreach activities, such as open days, in collaboration with faculty academic and administrative staff. Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Essential criteria


A minimum of GCSE in English, Maths & Science (Level 2) qualification or demonstrable vocational skills in a relevant science or engineering subject. Assessment stage: Application*
Knowledge and experience of working standard workshop machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, bench drills etc. Assessment stage: Test / Interview*
Experience of working in a workshop or similar environment, including the production of machined parts and assemblies for student projects and teaching. Assessment stage: Test / Application*
Knowledge of safe working practices and experience of applying Health and Safety in a working environment. Assessment stage: Interview / Application*
Technical Professional Registration or a commitment to Continuous Professional Development. Assessment stage: Interview / Application*

Desirable criteria
