Responsible to The Headteacher, senior leaders, SENCo and the Class teacher

Post Teaching Assistant/Lunchtime Supervisor

Function To support the teachers in the provision of a positive learning environment in the school. To assist in the integration, teaching and welfare of all children within the school.

Hours 25 hours per week as a classroom TA

5 hours per week as a lunchtime supervisor

TA Salary Grade B

Lunchtime Supervisor Salary Grade A

Duties and Responsibilities



The post requires you to provide a support service complementary to the teaching activities in this school, as outlined in Hampshire County Council's Manual of Personnel Practice which has been adopted by the Governing Body of this school.

To have a positive manner and to treat all visitors, colleagues and children with respect, courtesy and consideration. To ensure that every effort is made to satisfy reasonable requirements and assist in the maintenance of an attractive welcoming site.

To carry out duties correctly and promptly in a good working atmosphere and to assist in the creation of a safer environment by adhering to the Health and Safety Regulations and agreed Codes of Practice for HCC employees. Attending training courses may be required as part of processional updating.

Supporting the Pupil



Drawing on knowledge of various forms of special needs and child development to develop an understanding of the specific needs of the child/ren concerned

Taking into account the needs of the individuals involved, aiding the child/ren to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:-

o clarifying and explaining instructions

o ensuring a child is able to use equipment and materials provided

o motivating and encouraging a child as required

o assisting in weak areas e.g. language, behaviour, reading, spelling, handwriting presentation etc

o helping children to concentrate on and finish work set

o meeting physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence

o in liaison with the class teacher devising complementary learning activities

Establishment of a supportive relationship with the children

Encouraging acceptance and integration of all children with other children in the school

Development of methods of promoting/reinforcing the child's self esteem.

Supporting the Teacher



Assisting the class teacher (and/or other professionals as appropriate) in the development of a suitable programme of support for child/ren

In conjunction with the class teacher (and/or other professionals as appropriate) assist in the development of a system of recording children's progress

Assist in the maintenance of child/ren's progress records in appropriate areas including recording observations on child behaviour and progress as directed by the class teacher

Participate in the evaluation of any support programme

Provide regular feedback about the child/ren to the teacher and carryout assessments

General Duties



To work with individual children, groups of children (which may include children with SEN or More Able) as directed by the class teacher or other members of staff

To assist with supervision of pupils on their arrival/departure if appropriate and at playtimes

To undertake first-aid duties with children as appropriate

To help children with personal cleanliness and clean up 'spoiled areas' as required

To make and display simple aids together with the creation of display boards as required

To carry out any reprographic duties required by the teacher

To prepare equipment and materials (e.g. mix paint, cut paper) and check and store after the session

To prepare and store general equipment (including books)

To work with children and be ale to prepare resources using computers

To accompany the child off the school premises as directed by the class teacher, but usually in the presence of a teacher

Supporting the School



Where appropriate develop a relationship to foster links between home and school

Liaison with, advising and in consultation with other members of the team, supporting the child/ren as and when the need arises

Attending relevant in-service training including all Health and safety training and child protection

There is a high confidentiality component and post holder needs to hold the trust and confidence of both the pupils and teachers. It may acquire information on child protection/family sensitive issues which must be treated carefully and appropriately

Supporting the Christian ethos of the school

Supporting and following the national, local and school policies and procedures and apply them to the work place

Any other tasks as directed by the Headteacher which fall within the purview of the post

Progression in Post



A Level 1 LSA will implement lesson plans, deal with pupil behaviour and make judgements about pupil progress/pupil needs normally in conjunction with the teacher

The shape of a Level 1 LSA's work will be broadly determined by the teacher.

To progress to a level 2 LSA you will need to:-



implement lesson plans, deal with pupil behaviour and make judgements about pupil progress/pupil needs without reference to the teacher

whilst working under the general direction of the teacher, will work unsupervised and without the close presence of the teacher.

will normally carry a specific specialist responsibility (e.g. speech therapy) and support other staff in the school when help is needed in this area

Trained to at least Level 3 NVQ

How would effectiveness in role be demonstrated?



Firm, sensitive and effective approach towards pupil discipline

Good organisational ability

Able to work at an advanced level with the teacher in planning and delivery of teaching activities (including those defined in Individual Education Plans)

Able to monitor and record pupil progress

Competent in working with groups of pupils without direct supervision from the teacher

Ability to apply knowledge and skills from training in practical classroom context

Flexible in relation to tasks undertaken and groups/children allocated

Ability to motivate and encourage children appropriately

Ability to work independently and with initiative

Ability to establish and maintain good relationships and rapport with other colleagues in the school and external contacts (e.g. parents, education psychologist, speech therapist)

"shadowing" experienced LSA's in school and be supported by a mentor

Have a knowledge of school and school systems/policies

Having an understanding of curriculum, particularly literacy and numeracy requirements

A positive approach towards pupil discipline and behaviour

Develop professional relationships between staff and pupils

Job Types: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months

Pay: 10,000.00-15,000.00 per year
