Job Description


As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting a diverse group of pupils with autism, each with unique needs and learning levels. The unit accommodates both verbal and non-verbal pupils, providing a stimulating and inclusive educational environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and group support to pupils with autism, assisting them with their individual learning goals and personal development.
  • Foster a safe and nurturing environment that encourages engagement, independence, and social interaction.
  • Collaborate with the class teacher and other professionals to develop and implement individualised education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support strategies.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of lessons, utilising appropriate teaching techniques and resources to meet the specific needs of autistic learners.
  • Support pupils in their communication and language development, employing a range of tools and techniques, including the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods.
  • Help pupils with daily routines, including personal care, if required, ensuring their well-being and maintaining a hygienic and tidy learning environment.
  • Monitor and record pupil\'s progress, providing feedback to the teacher and contributing to assessment processes.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to promote a positive and inclusive ethos within the school and the wider community.
Requirements:
  • Previous experience working with individuals with autism or special educational needs is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of autism spectrum disorders and familiarity with strategies for supporting individuals with varied needs and learning levels.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish positive relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
  • Empathy, patience, and resilience in working with individuals who may display challenging behaviours.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to accommodate the diverse needs and changing demands of the classroom environment.
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and a willingness to learn new strategies and techniques.
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Additional qualifications in special educational needs or autism-related courses are advantageous but not essential.
