The Payroll Team Leader will act as the Payroll Manager's right-hand support, ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the payroll function. This role is responsible for managing weekly payroll processing, handling complex pay queries, and maintaining high standards of compliance and accuracy. The Payroll Team Leader will represent for the manager during periods of absence and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Process weekly payroll accurately and in line with internal deadlines
Act as the first point of contact for complex payroll queries and escalations
Support with daily data reporting and KPI tracking when the manager is unavailable
Ensure compliance with Agency Worker Regulations, Working Time Directive, and relevant employment legislation
Conduct and oversee modern slavery checks within the payroll process
Maintain and update payroll records, ensuring all data is accurate and confidential
Liaise with recruitment, compliance, and accounts teams to resolve payroll discrepancies
Deputise for the Payroll Manager during periods of annual leave or absence
Identify process improvements and contribute to development of payroll procedures
Ensure all reporting is timely, accurate, and fit for purpose
Provide guidance and informal support to more junior team members
What are we looking for?
Proven ability to manage and guide a team effectively.
Previous experience in a payroll environment (preferably agency or high-volume)
Solid understanding of payroll compliance: AWR, WTD, visa restrictions, etc.
Strong knowledge of modern slavery best practices in payroll processing
Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy under pressure
High level of computer literacy (Excel, payroll systems, databases)
Strong organisational and time management skills
Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion
Confident communicator with a proactive, solution-focused approach
Able to work independently and take initiative when required
