The Role
As Technical Engineering Manager, you will lead the integration of technical systems, design innovation and quality assurance at Sperrin Metal, including driving the adoption of modern software and digital tools to support business improvement.
You will champion the design lifecycle from concept through to production, ensuring compliance and robustness while driving continuous improvement. You will oversee and develop a team of designers, ensuring design quality, consistency and alignment with engineering standards and regulations. Working closely with production and operations, you will foster collaboration across teams and embedded Lean practices in technical and design processes.
This role balances technical management and innovative design leadership, supporting our growth ambitions while promoting a motivated, high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, mentor and develop a team of designers, ensuring design output meets regulatory, technical and customer standards.
Manage end-to-end design processes, from conceptual development through detailed design and documentation.
Lead all aspects of product compliance, certification and regulatory approvals, ensuring full adherence to applicable British, European and International standards.
Maintain up to date knowledge of relevant legislation and technical standards, proactively.
Oversee and maintain all technical documentation, declarations of conformity and quality records required for certification and audits.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives and embed Lean methodologies across design and technical workflows.
Collaborate cross-functionally with production, operations, and commercial teams to ensure manufacturing feasibility and customer satisfaction.
Assess existing technical systems and software, identifying areas for improvement and digital transformation across the department and if necessary, lead the process of selecting, procuring and implementing new software and systems for design, production and compliance.
Manage external technical consultants and suppliers as required.
Monitor and report on technical and design performance metrics.
Foster a culture of innovation, quality, and accountability within technical teams.
Identify, evaluate and implement opportunities to leverage AI and digital tools to improve business performance, streamline processes, enhance data-driven decision-making and drive innovation across the organisation.
Essential Criteria
Relevant industry experience in metal fabrication or related manufacturing, combining technical and design expertise.
Proven leadership skills with ability to manage multifunctional teams and projects.
Good understanding of Lean principles and experience applying continuous improvement in technical settings.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Effective communication skills for collaboration with senior management and cross-department teams.
Demonstrated experience in managing budgets, resources, and project costs to support strategic planning and operational efficiency.
Extensive experience in overseeing product certifications, regulatory compliance and associated technical documentation.
Proven project management experience in delivering solutions and services to meet customer requirements.
Demonstrated awareness & experience using AI-driven tools or digital automation to enhance efficiency, reporting accuracy or business insight, with a willingness to lead future AI system improvements and adoption initiatives.
Desirable Criteria
Experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and ERP/MRP systems, with flexibility to adapt to company tools.
Knowledge of industry standards and regulations applicable to metal fabrication.
Exposure to quality management systems and compliance frameworks.
Qualifications in engineering, technical design, or related disciplines a plus.
