The Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology (LMCB) is a research-intensive Division within the Faculty of Life Sciences, with an international reputation for research excellence in cell and tissue biology and innovative education programmes. The LMCB provides a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment, housed in a single building, where staff and students work together to understand the fundamental principles of cell and tissue biology relevant to human disease. The Division has specialist in-house state-of-the-art science technology platforms, which include light, super- resolution and electron microscopy imaging, as well as a world-leading High-content Biology Facility. In addition, the Division is a partner of the UCL-Zeiss Multiscale Imaging Centre and has strong cross- disciplinary links across UCL and beyond, including the Institute of the Physics of Living Systems, the Cancer Institute and the London Centre for Nanotechnology.

The Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology (LMCB) at UCL is seeking an experienced and proactive Technical Manager to join our small, collaborative team. This is a 1 year fixed-term, full-time, on-site position based at UCL's main campus in Bloomsbury. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in supporting world-class research. You will lead on health and safety across the department, manage laboratory operations, and oversee infrastructure to ensure the smooth running of our scientific environment. A central responsibility of this role is the management of our ACDP Category 2 virus lab facility, including statutory health and safety inspections, risk assessment reviews, and delivery of safety training, working closely with the Biosciences Operations Team. You will also act as the Senior Fire Evacuation Marshal and support the Director in meeting departmental safety responsibilities. In this diverse and impactful role, you will: o Lead health and safety for the department, including statutory inspections, training, and documentation o Manage the ACDP Category 2 virus lab facility and ensure regulatory compliance o Oversee the maintenance and servicing of core laboratory equipment o Manage laboratory infrastructure and space planning o Lead a small technical team, including two Technicians and a Stores Officer o Procure lab equipment and negotiate contracts for repairs and maintenance o Liaise with Estates, Security, and UCL's central services as the primary point of contact o Support sustainability initiatives in collaboration with the Green Team This role is ideal for someone with strong technical and organisational skills who enjoys working in a dynamic research environment. About you

The successful candidate will ideally have experience with health and safety checks, audits of laboratory facilities, troubleshooting any faults and emergencies where an immediate repair is needed. Successful candidate will also be helping with laboratory checks, facilitate monthly checks and reports, including radioactive material data reports and safety checks on safety cabinets, fire safety equipment, Personal Protective Equipment etc. Part of the role is also overseeing redistribution of liquid nitrogen to various containers at LMCB and line managing Store officer and two Laboratory technicians. Previous experience with assisting operations managers within a building with multiple research labs is desirable. This job is very busy at times and can be physically demanding, so the appointee needs to be able to be on their feet good part of the day. We are looking for a confident communicator and problem-solver with strong knowledge of laboratory safety, excellent organisational skills, and a collaborative approach to supporting scientific research.
