The Cruciform Teaching Laboratories (CTL) is responsible for providing the majority of practical year one and two undergraduate teaching for the Division of Biosciences and Medical School (about 20% of the total UCL undergraduates). In addition the CTL provides a small amount of Masters, Postgraduate and CPD teaching. The Unit comprises two wet labs for biochemistry, molecular biology and microbiology teaching, two dry labs for physiology, anatomy and computer-aided learning. There are over 1,000 direct contact hours with student groups per year, plus attendant preparation and take-down times. The Unit has a direct impact on the student experience at UCL so it is important that the best possible service is delivered at all times. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Cruciform Teaching Laboratories. You will work in a small, collaborative and innovative team who are committed to providing the best learning experience for the students.


About the role

The main purpose of this position is to work with the team and manager across all aspects of the The Cruciform Teaching Laboratories. This includes; liaising with academic and teaching staff about the provision of their practical sessions, preparing everything required for the practical class, including reagents, microbiological cultures, growing mammalian cells, prepping tissue for pharmacology practicals, working with invertebrates and setting up equipment for physiology practicals. o We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible. o This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. About you

You will ensure the smooth running of the practical laboratory sessions by preparing any reagents or consumables required for the sessions, setting up equipment, and providing instruction in it's operation if required. Working with the team you will set up the laboratories prior to the practicals and clear them away at the end. You will be responsible for ordering anything required for the practicals, managing stock and will ensure everything is conducted in a safe manner and high health and safety standards are maintained. You must have a minimum of Level 5 qualification (advanced City and Guilds, BTEC Higher, or equivalent NVQ) in relevant subject or equivalent experience. Higher (degree level) qualifications are acceptable and proven knowledge of Biological/Biomedical sciences. Experience in a laboratory environment is also essential.
