Overview of Position:



The Theatre Manager will be responsible for achieving key Clinical, Operational and Financial targets in the theatre complex within the Hospital and Day Surgery Centre by developing and leading a team of clinical staff delivering exceptional care during the anaesthetic, perioperative and recovery phases of the surgical patient journey.

The Theatre Manager will be responsible for providing leadership, and sound management skills within the area, developing and fostering a positive environment through the effective development and use of both staff within the theatre and those support staff involved with the theatre operation. As the clinical expert within the theatre area, they will deliver direct patient care whilst, managing, leading, co-ordinating and overseeing clinical practice for all nursing services provided to surgical patients.

The Theatre Manager is also responsible for ensuring that sufficient, appropriately skilled staff are available and that all materials and equipment required to deliver surgical services are available and fit for purpose.

Included within this remit is the coordination and facilitation of the introduction of new surgical procedures and the evaluation of new methods of working, clinical practice, new equipment and the sourcing of new and / or alternate materials in support of these activities.

The Theatre Manager will be responsible for liaising with the key members of theatre staff at offsite locations, such as other private hospitals / clinic and the NHS, at which Elanic offers surgical services or provides surgical services for. This will include the scheduling of support staff such as anaesthetists and first assistants for surgical list at these sites. It will also be required to liaise with these other staff members regarding issues of clinical governance, Elanic owned high cost consumables / implants, clinical incidents and / or variances.

The theatre manager is responsible for the design, implementation, analysis and reporting of various key clinical audits both in the theatre area and in the clinic as a whole.

In conjunction with the Clinical Service Manager, oversee and facilitate all aspects of HR issues within the remit and work with Governance / Health and Safety advisors to ensure that all practices within the operating theatre are safely delivered. In fulfilment of these duties the Theatre Manager will oversee audits, both clinical and operational, as required to ensure compliance, good clinical governance and effective operation of the theatre area.

The Theatre Manager will also be responsible for working as part of the Clinical Management Team in the development of the business. This will include the development and maintenance of effective methods for Financial Governance such as the management of theatre stocks and specifically Controlled Drugs; the service and repair management planning for key theatre equipment and the effective use of theatre labour.

As part of this collective management responsibility the Theatre Manager will contribute to addressing any issue raised through day to day activities and working with the management team to help define and drive the strategic direction of the business.

Personal Attributes & Skills



Essential:



Registered Nurse Part 1 or equivalent ODP qualification

Relevant experience in theatres at a senior level

Experience of project management

Experience of HR management including building and managing a team of clinical staff

Minimum of 5 years post registration experience

Strong understanding of theatre protocols, policies and national guidelines

PC literate with intermediate skills on all Microsoft Office packages.

Excellent interpersonal skills, professional demeanour, strong leadership qualities and able to work as part of a team at all levels.

A strong focus on customer care.

Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities

Commitment to patient centred care and quality improvement

Proven ability of working in partnership with consultants and the wider clinical team and management team.

Desirable:



Working knowledge of Quality Systems.

Working knowledge of Clinic Office software package.

Familiar with the legal requirements of UK management responsibilities (Health and Safety at Work; Data Protection; Employment Law & Practices).

Key Responsibilities and Duties



Customer Focus



Ensure that standards and processes are in place to deliver outstanding clinical care and engagement at every "touch point" in the patient journey.

Ensure that all staff are aware of the customer complaints process and understand when to escalate any issues. For any complaints relating to Theatre performance, assume the role of investigator.

Be involved in the Customer Engagement program for the clinic including Open Events, Consultant Engagement evenings, GP events and trade shows.

Financial Responsibility

Oversee the cost management of all theatre activities

Manage the costs for the service and repair of all clinical equipment within the site.

Coordinate with other hospital staff regarding preparation of financial statements and the necessary processing of purchasing / sales documentation in support of this.

Manage the negotiations with suppliers who have a specific supply responsibility for theatre materials. This may include as required defining contractual supply terms and conditions and negating on prices.

People Management



Establish a high-performance team of theatre staff that is efficient, knowledgeable, service-oriented, and shares responsibility for delivering excellent care to the surgical patients.

Ensure that sufficient staff are in place and suitably qualified and trained to meet the workload on any given day.

Coordinate regular team meetings and manage staff performance, appraisals, and professional development

Promote a culture of continuous improvement, safety and excellence

Ensure all staff receive appropriate induction, training and ongoing professional development

Operational Management



Ensure the effective delivery of the surgical service including the delivery, maintenance and processing of equipment and materials that are fit for purpose and that the protocols to underpin these services are in place.

Ensure that all staff are aware of the standards of behaviour and dress for theatre and these standards are complied with and maintained.

Ensure that the housekeeping in all areas of the theatre complex is up to the agreed standard.

Ensure that all nursing staff and practitioners are appropriately trained on all medical equipment and that their professional registrations are current.

Ensure compliance with the requirements of the hospitals Controlled Drug Policy are enforced across all areas of the hospital.

Ensure that all staff are aware of the theatre emergency procedures and that these procedures are robust and effective in dealing with patients who have had an adverse clinical event.

Design, implement, analyse and report to Senior Management mission critical and key clinical audits.

Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control measures

Monitor clinical standards, audit practices and implement action plans to address areas for improvement

Liaise with other departments (wards etc) to ensure smooth patient flow

Coordinate theatre schedules to optimize operating time and resources

Key Measurements & Deliverables



Clinical Incidents / variances within theatre < 0.5% of all patient treatments

Zero non-compliances on Controlled Drugs Audits

Zero Stock Outs or Losses on Theatre Materials

Customer Complaints < 0.5% of Activity (Surgical).

All service schedules completed on time 100% (Equipment and processes)

Quality & Business Objectives



Drive Continuous Improvement within the business ensuring that CARs are closed and implemented within 20 Working Days.

Net promoter score to be maintained at >75%.

Activity Growth.

All Theatre related customer complaints closed within 20 Working Days
