You'll combine on-the-job experience with structured study -- developing practical skills while working toward professional qualifications and a rewarding career in transport and civil engineering.

Role Overview




As a Traffic & Highway Engineering Apprentice, you'll assist our engineers and designers on a wide range of traffic and transport projects. You'll learn how to develop, design, and deliver engineering solutions that support active travel, public transport, and safer road networks.


You'll work as part of multidisciplinary teams and gain hands-on experience using industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software. Over time, you'll take on more responsibility as your skills and knowledge develop.

Key Responsibilities



Assist in the preparation of design drawings, plans, and supporting documents using CAD and design software. Support the delivery of highways, traffic engineering and active travel schemes, from concept through to detailed design. Help collect, analyse, and interpret traffic and transport data. Contribute to highways design, signage layouts, and streets design Participate in site visits to gather information and observe existing conditions. Assist in preparing technical reports and presentation materials. Maintain project records and support general project administration.

Qualifications

This role is ideal for school leavers (GCSE or A-Level) who can demonstrate the following:

Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English Three A-Levels (or equivalent such as BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering), including Maths and a physical science at grade C or above - required for Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship An interest in civil, transport, or traffic engineering and a desire to build a career in the field. Aptitude for software-based engineering and drawing, e.g., AutoCAD or 3D modelling tools. Basic computer skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Awareness of transport, sustainability, or urban design issues. Enthusiasm for creating safer, more sustainable, and more accessible streets. Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving. Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Willingness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges. Commitment to continuous learning and professional development A creative, practical, and adaptable mindset with a passion for problem-solving Strong attention to detail, organisation, and communication skills Ability to work effectively in a team and show initiative when working independently
