An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to undertake the role of Trainee Building Surveyor based at Kent Police Headquarters. Reporting to the Construction Manager, you will co-ordinate all administrative and technical functions and in doing so you will place the internal partners at the heart of the services in what you do. Excellent stakeholder management and being communicative with internal and external partners will be essential.
The successful candidate will train as a Technician/Building Surveyor for Kent Police, working in support of the surveying team to inspect and provide advice on the design, construction, maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of all types of buildings and sites within the estate portfolio.
The role will be responsible for undertaking inspections, surveys, condition reports, dilapidations, production and maintain measured site plans, and defect investigations, preparing reports, site plans, schedules of works, specifications in compliance with building and health and safety regulations. Assist in the delivery and contribution of contract administration and contract management to ensure delivery of schemes.
Work alongside and train with existing experienced Building Surveyors, Engineers and Project Managers, gaining on the job experience and expertise which will support career development and on-going commitments towards training and qualifying as a technician/surveyor in order to gain invaluable knowledge and skills from colleagues. This will include undertaking on-the-job training and meeting continuing professional development commitments.
Undertake and support site visits and inspections of Kent Police buildings, as requested, in order to assist in the identification of maintenance works or improvements which will support the operational use requirements, sustainability, space reduction and savings from the more effective use of space.
Produce measurements for existing buildings and draw site plans, including updating existing plans or producing new ones, and maintain records of their current usage, to ensure that the Force has accurate information on its property portfolio. This will involve the use of CAD and other technical aids.
Support the building surveyors and engineers with investigations, feasibility studies and surveys of building services, providing estimates of costs for repairs, maintenance and improvement works in order to assist the Construction Manager with the preparation of works programmes and the development of projects.
Assist with assigned minor projects, preparing specifications and estimates, producing drawings, collating tender documentation, as directed and provide support for larger projects and work programmes to enable the effective delivery and management of projects within the department. This will involve providing general help and technical support to Project Managers, surveyors and engineers in relation to estimates personally produced by the post holder.
Collect building asset data, including mechanical and electrical appliances, fire/first aid asset records, furniture as well as information about the condition, suitability and need for maintenance, repair and/or redecoration, in order to ensure that the AutoCad records and CA FM database has an up-to-date snapshot of the Kent Police Estate. This will be done in close co-operation with colleagues in the Asset Management team.
Provide estimates for repairs, maintenance and improvement works; engaging with end users and key stakeholders to ensure that their expectations are fully understood and effectively managed.
Experience/Qualifications:
The Trainee Surveyor will have a general education to A level standard or equivalent and an interest in buildings and their repair and construction. They will be keen to pursue a career as a qualified Technician/Building Surveyor. They will have had previous administrative work experience in an Estate office or construction company.
The successful candidate will be committed to pursuing a building related career and be prepared to study. The Force will consider quid pro quo applications for day release to allow further training.
They will have some knowledge of measurement, design work and general building knowledge and experience with AutoCAD and proficiency in Microsoft products would also be advantageous.
The successful candidate should have the ability to work well on their own within a team environment, be able to communicate effectively and professionally with customers, contractors, stakeholders etc. with a high standard of presentation, self-motivation and drive.

Kent Police offer incremental increases within this salary band, therefore the salary for this position will rise to a maximum of 37,932.00.
