We are seeking a reliable Trainee Laboratory Technician to support formulation, testing, and quality assurance work within our polyurethane manufacturing and R&D operations. The successful candidate will have practical laboratory experience, and a commitment to maintaining high safety and quality standards, Training will be given.
Key Responsibilities
1. Formulation & Sample Preparation
Prepare polyurethane formulations including polyols, isocyanates, catalysts, blowing agents, surfactants, and additives.
Produce foam, elastomer, adhesive, or coating samples following company SOPs.
Accurately measure and record batch weights, ratios, and process parameters.
2. Quality Control Testing
Carry out routine QC testing such as:
Viscosity
Density and specific gravity
Hardness (Shore A/D)
Tensile and tear properties
Compression set
Reactivity/cream/gel time
Foam rise and expansion characteristics
Test incoming raw materials and finished goods against internal and customer specifications.
3. Analytical Testing & Equipment Operation
Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, including:
FTIR
Tensile testing machines
Brookfield viscometers
Moisture analysers
Interpret test data, troubleshoot anomalies, and report any deviations promptly.
Process Polyurethane Systems through our in house dispensing machine.
4. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate laboratory records in line with company and audit requirements.
Prepare test reports and communicate results to chemists, production teams, and quality managers.
Support compliance with ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 standards and internal quality systems.
5. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
Handle chemicals--including isocyanates--safely, following COSHH assessments and using appropriate PPE.
Follow UK HSE guidelines and company safety procedures at all times.
Assist with chemical inventory management, waste segregation, and safe disposal of laboratory wastes.
6. Equipment & Laboratory Maintenance
Carry out routine calibration and basic maintenance of lab equipment.
Keep laboratory areas organised and clean in line with 5S practices.
Support stock control and procurement of consumables.
Qualifications Required
Good numerical skills and attention to detail.
Ability to follow technical instructions and maintain accurate records.
Preferred
Experience working with polyurethane, polymers, plastics, coatings, or adhesives.
Familiarity with COSHH, REACH, and HSE regulations.
Experience with ASTM/ISO testing methods relevant to polyurethanes.
