Training Team Leader - Driver

Trains don't just run themselves - it takes skilled, confident people to keep everything moving safely and smoothly. As our Training Team Leader, you'll be at the heart of that effort. You'll lead a talented group of trainers who deliver everything from apprenticeship programmes to operational upskilling, making sure our people have the skills, confidence, and knowledge to perform at their best.

You'll be part of our Learning, Talent and Development team - shaping curriculum design, driving innovation in how we teach and learn, and making sure our training meets the highest standards. Whether it's getting ready for an OFSTED inspection or supporting one of Northern's major transformation projects, you'll make sure our training delivery is professional, compliant, and learner-focused.

This is a visible role, split between our Leeds and Manchester offices - typically around two days a week in each location.

What you'll be doing

Leading, coaching, and developing a high performing training team, ensuring consistently high standards. Managing all aspects of people leadership - recruitment, onboarding, performance, and wellbeing. Designing, delivering, and improving training programmes that meet operational, safety, and regulatory needs. Acting as curriculum lead for apprenticeships, ensuring programmes are modern, inclusive, and effective. Embedding safeguarding practices in every part of our training. Maintaining compliance with OFSTED, ESFA (Education and Skills Funding Agency), and internal standards. Using digital tools and modern learning techniques to keep training engaging and effective. Building strong relationships with operational leaders, safety teams, auditors, and other stakeholders.

About you

Proven leadership skills, a passion for developing people, and a track record in delivering high-quality training are must-haves. You'll bring:

A Level 5 qualification (or equivalent experience in managing training programmes) Safety-critical competence and at least 3 years' operational experience. Experience of managing apprenticeships or working in further education. Strong communication skills and the ability to influence others. Confidence in using data and feedback to improve training. A collaborative approach - working with others to make training better, faster, and more impactful.

Why Northern?

We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B - we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob... there's a place for you here in the railway.
