The Transport Workshop & Compliance Manager is responsible for ensuring the safe, legal, and efficient operation of a fleet of 50+ HGVs. This role oversees all workshop activities, vehicle maintenance, MOT and inspection compliance, and operator licence obligations, while working closely with transport operations to minimise downtime and ensure full regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Workshop & Fleet Maintenance Management
Manage the day-to-day operation of the HGV workshop, including technicians, fitters, and external maintenance providers
Plan and control
preventative maintenance schedules
, inspections, servicing, and repairs for all vehicles and trailers
Ensure all vehicles meet
DVSA roadworthiness standards
at all times
Control vehicle downtime and maximise fleet availability
Manage MOT preparation, presentation, and pass rates
Oversee defect reporting systems, ensuring defects are rectified and signed off correctly
Ensure calibration and maintenance of workshop equipment and tools
Compliance & Legal Responsibilities
Act as a key point of responsibility for
Operator Licence (O-Licence) compliance
Ensure adherence to:
DVSA regulations
Maintenance inspection intervals
Record keeping standards
Vehicle testing and tachograph regulations
Manage tachograph downloads, analysis, and infringement reporting
Work with drivers and transport management to reduce infringements
Prepare for and manage
DVSA audits, inspections, and investigations
Maintain accurate and auditable records for vehicles, trailers, inspections, and repairs
Health, Safety & Standards
Ensure compliance with
Health & Safety legislation
within the workshop
Carry out risk assessments and implement safe systems of work
Ensure all staff are trained, competent, and working safely
Promote a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement
Budget & Cost Control
Manage workshop budgets, parts stock, and external repair costs
Control spend on parts, consumables, and third-party maintenance
Review maintenance contracts and supplier performance
Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or compliance
People Management
Line manage workshop staff, including recruitment, training, and performance management
Carry out toolbox talks, performance reviews, and disciplinary processes where required
Support driver training in vehicle checks, defect reporting, and compliance awareness
Reporting & Communication
Produce regular reports on:
Fleet availability
Maintenance costs
Compliance performance
MOT pass rates
Tachograph infringements
Liaise with senior management, transport planners, drivers, and external bodies
Support continuous improvement across fleet and compliance processes
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
Proven experience managing an
HGV fleet of 50+ vehicles
Strong knowledge of
DVSA regulations and Operator Licence requirements
Experience managing an HGV workshop or maintenance function
Excellent understanding of tachograph rules and drivers' hours
Strong organisational and leadership skills
Ability to manage audits and regulatory inspections confidently
IT literate with fleet management and tachograph systems
Desirable
CPC qualification (National or International)
IRTEC qualification or equivalent technical certification
Experience using systems such as Webfleet, Fleet Check, or similar
Previous DVSA encounter or Public Inquiry experience
