Trauma Informed Therapeutic Practitioner (send)

Ipswich, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

About the Role | Where Creativity Meets Care

We are looking for a

creative, trauma-informed practitioner

who believes that connection comes before curriculum.

You will work with children and young people with

complex SEND

, particularly those who are

non-verbal, autistic, and experiencing behavioural and emotional regulation challenges

. Many of our pupils are unable to access traditional school settings, so this role is about meeting children

where they are

, not where systems expect them to be.

This role is perfect for someone who feels confident stepping beyond the classroom and using

play, drama, movement, sensory exploration, and visual communication

to help children feel safe, regulated, and ready to engage.

What You'll Be Doing | The Heart of the Role

Creating and delivering

1:1 or 2:1 therapeutic education sessions

for children who cannot currently attend mainstream or specialist school.

Supporting pupils with

behavioural challenges, anxiety, and trauma responses

using a calm, attuned, and relational approach.

Using

Makaton, visual supports, sensory tools, and creative strategies

to support communication for non-verbal or minimally verbal children.

Adapting sessions

moment-by-moment

, responding to emotional regulation, sensory needs, and the child's cues.

Building

consistent, trusting relationships

with pupils who may struggle with change, transitions, or unfamiliar adults.

Completing

daily observations, risk assessments, and session plans

in line with SunDrama procedures.

Working collaboratively with

families, schools, and local authorities

to support EHCP outcomes and continuity of care.

Who We're Looking For | You Might Be a Great Fit If...Essential

You have experience working with

non-verbal autistic children

and/or young people with complex SEND.

You feel confident supporting children with

behavioural challenges and emotional dysregulation

.

You work from a

trauma-informed perspective

, seeing behaviour as communication.

You have knowledge or practical experience using

Makaton or other visual/alternative communication systems

.

You bring a

creative, flexible, and reflective

approach to your practice.

You hold an

Enhanced DBS

(or are willing to obtain one).

Desirable

A background in

therapeutic education, creative therapies, play therapy, drama therapy, or SEN teaching

.

Experience delivering provision in

home, community, or alternative settings

.

A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

A Note About SunDrama

SunDrama is not an agency.

We are a

small, values-led therapeutic education service

working gently, relationally, and with real care.

Our aim is not volume, but

impact

-- touching small hearts in meaningful ways and creating safe spaces where children feel seen, heard, and understood.

We are intentionally growing as a

close, supportive team

, and we genuinely value the experience, ideas, and creativity each practitioner brings. If you would enjoy

sharing your experience, growing together, and helping shape a small therapeutic service

, we would love to work alongside you.

We believe that meaningful work happens when people feel supported. That's why we make space for:

Monthly coffee catch-ups

Occasional shared lunches and connection time

Ongoing communication, reflection, and support -- knowing that you are

never working alone

If you are looking for a role where you feel

valued, supported, and encouraged

, and where your work can truly make a difference --

we're here.
