SOS!SEN is a national charity supporting families and young people navigating the SEND system. We provide practical advice, representation, and advocacy to ensure children and young people receive the education and support they are legally entitled to.
As the charity continues to grow, strong financial oversight is essential to maintaining confidence with funders, regulators, and beneficiaries.
The Role
We are seeking a Volunteer Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and provide strategic financial oversight.
This is a governance role rather than a day-to-day bookkeeping position. An experienced Admin Manager manages routine bookkeeping using Xero, but the Treasurer retains overall responsibility for financial oversight, controls, compliance, and reporting to the Board.
The Treasurer plays a critical role in ensuring SOS!SEN remains financially robust, transparent, and funder compliant.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic oversight of the charity's finances on behalf of the Board
Chair bi-monthly finance and risk committee meetings.
Support our shop based in Worcester Park, managing petty cash bookkeeping and reconciling takings with bank statements.
Review and interpret management accounts and financial reports
Present clear, accurate financial updates to the Board of Trustees
Oversee payroll, including authorisation of salary payments
Ensure appropriate financial controls and risk management are in place
Liaise with external accountants regarding annual accounts and statutory filings
Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
Act as a signatory on bank accounts where required
Oversee the financial management of grants from trusts and foundations
Ensure restricted and unrestricted funds are clearly tracked, allocated, and reported
Monitor grant spend against agreed budgets and conditions
Work with staff to ensure financial information supports annual funder reporting
Provide assurance to the Board that grant income is used in line with funder agreements and charity law
Requirements
Proven experience in financial management or accounting roles, preferably within a non-profit or organisational setting
Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or similar platforms
Strong understanding of financial regulations and best practices in financial management
Attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of financial record keeping
Good communication skills to liaise with internal teams and external partners
Relevant qualifications in finance, accounting, or related fields are desirable but not essential
This role is vital for maintaining the organisation's fiscal integrity and supporting its long-term objectives. We welcome applications from candidates who are committed to excellence in financial stewardship.
