The Thoracic department at St James University Hospital is one of the largest in the UK with a catchment population of 2.5 million. It currently services 6 MDTs across the region. The department has expanded greatly over the years and continues to do so. We currently have 8 consultants, 9 Registrars, and 3 ANPs. Theatres and clinics run daily. There is a 32 bedded thoracic ward including a dedicated 4 bedded HDU. The department has a great track record for training and innovation.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to engage in all aspects of care in the department. This includes the care of patients both pre and post operatively, attending relevant MDTs, attending theatre and clinic sessions, being involved in the on-call rota and teaching of medical students, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals.
A large portion of the responsibilities will relate to cover of the inpatients, but will include out-patient clinics and surgical theatres as well.

DUTIES OF THE POST
Post holder will be expected to participate in ward rounds, clinics and operating theatres where appropriate. The postholder accepts that s/he will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation where practicable with senior colleagues. A wide range of practical procedures are undertaken in the Trust which the successfully appointed candidates will have an opportunity to learn. The post-holder is strongly encouraged to complete regular work-based placed assessments to document evidence of their personal and professional development.
LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The post will be available for an initial period of 6 months, extendable to 12. The post is suitable for any junior surgeon who wishes to develop experience in Thoracic surgery. There will be a number of research opportunities. The job will be based on the thoracic surgery ward in St. Jamess University Hospital. There is a resident registrar as well as a dedicated oncall consultant, who participates in the ward rounds and provides support.

  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at the time of application.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
Desirable
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
