Job Description


We are looking to appoint a Trust Research Registrar within the Colorectal surgery service at University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Derriford Hospital, Devon to commence from October 2025 for 12 months
The post holder will undertake research looking at aspects of colorectal surgery. There will be regular colonoscopy training opportunities for the successful applicant. A motivated applicant would be expected to be aiming for JAG accreditation in colonoscopy.
The post is designed to support research up to MD level, subject to satisfactory progress. Successful applicants will join one of the ongoing research programmes which include projects in anastomotic leak in colorectal sugar or development of colorectal cancer.
The post is funded by the GI directorate, and in addition to the research project will involve covering a consultant supervised clinic, as well as a regular after-hours commitment as the on-call general surgical registrar.
Main duties of the job
It is anticipated that the successful applicant will work at a level between the surgical registrars and consultants, however the role can be adjusted according to the candidate's experience and competencies. The post-holder will have access to regular theatre lists, where one-to-one training will be given in resection techniques.
Assistance with clinical audit and maintaining the departmental database is expected. Help with teaching junior doctors and medical students are also required. The post holder will also form part of the Registrar Acute Surgical Take rota as dictated by service requirements.
The appointee will have the opportunity to develop teaching skills within the department and also through the undergraduate teaching programme. Colorectal service in University Hospitals Plymouth work very closely with the university of Plymouth faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and provide extensive teaching for medical students. Within this post there will be regular teaching commitments once a week basis.
There is a busy endoscopy unit, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity for supervised or independent colonoscopy experience within the timetable depending on skilllevel/ JAG accreditation.
This is a Trust appointment and is not a formal training post with deanery or Royal College approval for training purposes. However, you will receive extensive training in all aspects of general and Colorectal surgery.

We have just received delivery of a second DaVinci surgical robot, we perform pelvic exenteration including laparoscopic pelvic side-wall node dissection, intestinal failure surgery, Colon capsule endoscopy, Complete mesocolic excision, IBD surgery including laparoscopic pouch surgery.
We are an accredited centre for pelvic floor surgery. We perform SNS and laparoscopic surgery for pelvic floor problems with a pelvic floor MDT.
There is an extensive commitment to emergency workload with an acute take usually admitting around 30 patients in 24 hours and the sub-speciality Colorectal, OG and HPB units running a speciality-specific rota on call 7 days a week.
The Colorectal service has 10 consultants, and the unit performs pelvic exenteration including laparoscopic pelvic side-wall node dissection, intestinal failure surgery, TEMS, Colon capsule endoscopy, complete mesocolic excision, IBD surgery including laparoscopic pouch surgery. As an accredited centre for pelvic floor surgery, performing SNS and laparoscopic surgery for pelvic floor problems with a pelvic floor MDT.

This post provides an excellent opportunity for exposure to a large number of general surgery cases as well as sub-speciality practice in Colorectal surgery.
Depending on the level of experience of the candidate the role can accommodate the opportunity to be involved in major complex surgeries. The successful candidate will participate in the standard work of the unit, including commitment to the general surgery on call rota in line with other middle grade doctors on the general surgical unit.
